Sacramento River Cats News Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jeremy Barfield went 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a home run to help the River Cats shut out the Nashville Sounds by a score of 9-0, completing a four-game series sweep at Herschel Greer Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The River Cats jumped out to an early lead, bringing nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. In the frame, Shane Peterson and Michael Choice each had RBI-singles, Stephen Vogt delivered a run-scoring groundout, and Barfield brought Choice home on a sacrifice fly to left field.

Sacramento plated three more in the fifth when, with Peterson and Choice on base, Barfield clubbed a three-run home run to left field, putting Sacramento ahead 7-0. After tacking on two more runs in the top of the ninth-one on a Vogt RBI-groundout and another on a Barfield groundout-the River Cats bullpen completed the shutout and the series sweep with a 9-0 victory.

River Cats starter Justin Thomas was practically unhittable, holding Nashville scoreless in six innings of work, allowing just three hits and two walks on 92 pitches with four strikeouts for his second win of the year. Darren Byrd, James Simmons and Evan Scribner combined for three, one-hit innings to complete Sacramento's second shutout of the season.

Barfield's home run was his second with Sacramento, and his 10th of 2013-counting the eight he hit with Double-A Midland before joining the River Cats. Choice finished 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, a walk and a strikeout, giving him his fourth-straight two-hit game. Hiro Nakajima went 1-for-5 with a run scored and is now hitting .241in seven games with Sacramento this season.

The River Cats out-scored the Sounds 28-11 during the four-game series. The sweep is the third of the year for the River Cats, who have also swept the Reno Aces and Salt Lake Bees.

The River Cats have an off day on Wednesday before returning home on Thursday, May 16, to open an eight-game homestand with a four-game series against the Oklahoma City RedHawks when River Cats righty Sonny Gray (4-1, 2.19 ERA) takes on RedHawks lefty Brett Oberholtzer (2-3, 6.08 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. on Miller Lite Thirsty Thursday at Raley Field.
