Round Rock Express News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. - The Round Rock Express (20-18) scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 5 apiece, before a wild pitch gave the Tucson Padres (20-18) the winning run Monday night in Tucson.
For the second game in a row, the Express got on the board first. In the second inning, designated hitter Joey Butler hit a lead-off single and came around to score on a single by right fielder Jim Adduci.
Tucson tried to answer back in the third when Padres third baseman Jesus Merchan attempted to score from second on a fielding error by Express starting pitcher Ryan Feierabend. Merchan was tagged out at home, leaving the Padres scoreless.
Feierabend had great control through the first four innings, allowing just three hits. He lost some of that control in the fifth inning, giving up three runs to Tucson. Merchan gave the E-Train trouble again, hitting a one-out single and advanced to second on a single by designated hitter Justin Miller. Both runners came around to score after Feierabend gave up a double to Dean Anna. Center fielder Dan Robertson followed up with a double of his own to plate Anna and give the Padres a 3-1 lead.
Tucson tacked on another run in the sixth inning on a double by catcher Rene Rivera to score shortstop Gregorio Petit.
Round Rock got that run back in the top of the seventh. Third baseman Yangervis Solarte led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Tucson starter Thad Weber. Two batters later, Solarte scored on a ground out by second baseman Greg Miclat to make it 4-2.
Express reliever Johan Yan came in in the bottom half of the inning for Feierabend. The southpaw ended his bid with 6.0 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits. He walked three and struck out five batters.
With Yan on the mound, Tucson took a three-run lead again. Yan plunked Jonathan Galvez with a pitch with two outs. Galvez immediately stole second and came around to score on a double off the bat of right fielder James Darnell.
The Padres attempted to add to their lead in the bottom of the eighth with lefty reliever Neal Cotts on the mound. With one out, Cotts gave up back-to-back doubles before getting Miller to strike out swinging. With Anna at the plate, the runner on third, Rivera, attempted to score on a thrown ball by Cotts, but was thrown out at the plate, keeping it 5-20. 000
The Express did exactly what was done to them the night before and tied the game up in the ninth. Left fielder Aaron Cunningham led off with his ninth double of the season. After Adduci walked, Miclat singled to right field to score Cunningham. Catcher Jose Felix lined a single to left field, plating Adduci. Padres pitcher Colt Hynes came in to replace reliever Brad Boxberger with two men on and one out. Hynes got the first batter he faced, Engel Beltre, to line out. He followed that up with back-to-back wild pitches to score Miclat, tying the game. With the leading run now on third base, shortstop Jurickson Profar grounded out to end the inning.
Reliever Lisalverto Bonilla came in to work the ninth, stranding one baserunner to send the game into extras.
In just their second extra-inning game of the season, the E-Train had the opportunity to take the lead in the top half of the tenth. First baseman Chris McGuiness led off with a double to right-center field. After Butler grounded out for the first out of the inning, McGuiness advanced to third on a single by Cunningham. In the next at-bat, Solarte grounded into an inning-ending double play, stranding a runner on third for the second consecutive inning.
With Bonilla still on the mound in the bottom half of the frame, Cody Decker lined a lead-off triple to right center. Petit drew a five-pitch walk to put runners on first and third with no outs. With Rivera at the plate, Bonilla unleashed a wild pitch, allowing the winning run to score for Tucson and giving the Express their third consecutive loss.
Bonilla fell to 2-2 with the loss while Padres' reliever Miles Mikolas got the win, improving to 1-1. Tucson starter Weber held the E-Train to just two runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings. He didn't allow a walk while fanning five.
The Express will close out its road trip with game four of four against the Padres tomorrow night at 9:05 p.m. CST. Round Rock will return to Dell Diamond for eight games beginning with Colorado Springs on May 16. For tickets and more information, visit www.RoundRockExpress.com or call (512) 255-2255.
