Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Catcher Matt McBride belted two home runs and drove in five to propel the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (23-14) over the Omaha Storm Chasers (19-18), 9-5, to take the series three games to one in front of 5,187 fans at Security Service Field.
In the top of the first inning Omaha hit four singles and drove in two runs to take the early lead for the third time this series. Storm Chasers' starting pitcher Nate Adcock (L, 2-3) walked Corey Dickerson to kick off the bottom of the inning before second baseman DJ LeMahieu singled Dickerson over to second. Both runners scored an out later on a two-run single by McBride.
Adcock and Sky Sox starting pitcher Chris Volstad each pitched a scoreless second inning, but the scoring would continue in the third. Omaha started off the scoring with two solo home runs, one by Johnny Giavotella and one by former Sky Sox' first baseman Chad Tracy.
McBride hit a home run of his own to lead off the bottom of the inning and bring the Sky Sox within one at 4-3. Ben Paulsen then hit a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a Colvin walk, the game was tied at four when Hernan Iribarren hit a RBI single. Colvin then scored on a Tommy Manzella ground out to give the Sox their first lead at 5-4.
The back-and-forth affair continued two innings later when Max Ramirez hit the team's third home run of the day and his seventh home run of the season to tie the game at five.
Manny Corpas (W, 2-2) would relieve Volstad in the sixth and throw three shutout innings. Colorado Springs would take the lead for good in that inning when Corey Dickerson slugged his second home run of the series. The red-hot outfielder now has eight extra-base hits against Omaha this year. The Sox added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on an error by third baseman Irving Falu, and on a two-run home run by McBride. The blast to left was his second of the day and his sixth tater of the home stand.
Tomorrow the Sky Sox will take a well deserved day off before traveling to Round Rock for the first game of an eight-game road trip. Left-hander Drew Pomeranz (5-0, 3.18) will make the start in Round Rock against fellow lefty and league leader in wins, Brad Mills (5-0, 3.71).
