'Cats Fall to Doubledays 7-5
August 13, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - Aaron Mizell went 3-for-5 with a double and his first professional home run, while also throwing out a baserunner at home plate, but the Tri-City ValleyCats fell 7-5 to the Auburn Doubledays at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Thursday night.
After the Doubledays took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Mizell evened the score by smashing the first pitch he saw from Auburn right-hander Jefry Rodriguez over the left field wall. Auburn pushed ahead again with a run in the third inning, before the 'Cats tied the score once more when Anthony Hermelyn drove home Bobby Wernes with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Unfortunately, the Doubledays went on to score twice in the seventh, and twice in the eighth, as the 'Cats entered the bottom half of the eighth inning down 6-2.
Tri-City was able to trim that deficit to a single run by scoring three times in that frame, when Dexture McCall drove home Mizell with an RBI groundout, Heremlyn brought home Wernes with a single, and Brooks Marlow scored Hermelyn on an RBI double.
However, Auburn added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, then held the 'Cats scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, to take the 7-5 win.
Other than Mizell, Hermelyn also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run and one run batted in, while Wernes went 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
The Doubledays and ValleyCats will now face off at 7 p.m., on Friday, to conclude this three-game series. On the mound for Auburn will be LHP Taylor Guilbeau (2-2, 3.94), with RHP Rogelio Armenteros (1-1, 4.03) getting the start for Tri-City.
