Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Seth Brown kept the game tied with his glove in the top of the eighth, then untied the game with his bat in the bottom of the inning with a two-run triple to give the Vermont Lake Monsters a 3-1 victory over the Connecticut Tigers in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Tigers tied the game 1-1 on a Cam Gibson RBI single in the eighth and had runners on first and second with two outs when Tanner Donnels lined a James Naile pitch into the leftcenter gap for a possible go ahead extra-base hit, but Brown made a slidling catch on the warning track for the final out of the inning and keep the game tied at one.

Then in the bottom of the inning, the Lake Monsters got a couple of runners on base with a Trace Loehr one-out infield single and Steven Pallares was hit by a pitch. Connecticut reliever Chase Edwards quickly got ahead 0-2 as Brown fouled off three straight pitches before lining the two-run triple to deep rightcenter to give Vermont a 3-1 lead. The Tigers got the leadoff batter on base in the ninth on an error, but a fielder's choice and double play ended the game.

Neither team could muster much offense until the eighth inning as the only other run of the game came in the fifth as Loehr scored on a Edwards wild pitch for a 1-0 Vermont lead. Tigers starter Matt Hall held the Lake Monsters hitless with one walk and five strikeouts over the first three innings before Edwards (6-4) allowed three runs on four hits over five innings to take the loss for Connecticut (25-25).

Angel Duno tossed five scoreless innings on four hits and two strikeouts in his second start since joining Vermont, while Naile (2-0) 1 2/3 hitless innings for the win. The Tigers unearned run in the eighth snapped a 21-inning scoreless streak for Vermont pitchers, but the Lake Monsters have not allowed an earned run in the last 25 innings dating back to the sixth inning of game two of the doubleheader on Tuesday at Batavia and have a 1.69 ERA over the last 10 games to lower the team ERA to a season-low 3.79 overall.

Vermont (24-28) has now won seven of its last nine games overall and six straight at Centennial Field dating back to the last four games on their previous homestand. It is the Lake Monsters longest home winning streak since June 20-July 4, 2010 when Vermont had a seven-game winning streak at Centennial.

The Lake Monsters will look for its seventh straight home win and a sweep of the three-game series when they host Connecticut on Friday starting at 7:05 pm. The first 500 kids entering the ballpark when the gates open at 6:00 pm will receive a Lake Monsters baseball courtesy of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont.
