-SPIKES TAKE ON CYCLONES TONIGHT: The State College Spikes, who now hold sole possession of first place in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race, continue their 10th Season this evening with the middle game of a three-game road series against the Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU Park. The set will be the last interdivisional action the Spikes will see this year, with the remainder of the regular season featuring action against only Pinckney Division teams. The Spikes now lead Lowell by a half-game, while Brooklyn is also bidding for an NYPL playoff berth as they sit just 1 1/2 games behind Staten Island in the McNamara Division standings and two games back of State College for the Wild Card berth. The Spikes are 9-19 all-time against the Cyclones, including a 5-8 record at MCU Park.
-LAST GAME: Orlando Olivera smashed his fourth home run of the year, and the Spikes held on for a 7-6 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones on Wednesday night at MCU Park. The win was the fifth in a row for the Spikes, who went to three games above .500 for the first time this season after the victory. Olivera's home run, a solo shot to left field on the first pitch of the second inning, was his third in the last seven games. The Missouri Baptist product and 2015 38th-round draft choice has now produced 17 runs batted in over his 20 games with State College. However, the Spikes had to withstand a late Brooklyn rally to capture the victory. The Cyclones scored a pair of runs in the ninth to draw within one, but Pedro Echemendia recorded a flyout and a strikeout to notch the save and finish the game. Casey Grayson, Jhohan Acevedo and Cole Lankford all produced a trio of hits in the contest.
-CROSS MAKES MOUND START FOR SPIKES: State College right-hander Carson Cross makes his seventh start and eighth overall appearance for the Spikes tonight. Cross has been stretched out lately, going at least 5 1/3 innings in each of his last two starts. The UConn product was the Cardinals' 14th-round draft choice this year. Last time out, Cross allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out two in a loss at West Virginia. The righty struck out a career-most six batters two outings ago in a no-decision at home against Lowell.
-CYCLONES SEND CANELON TO HILL: Brooklyn will put left-hander Kevin Canelon on the mound tonight for his tenth appearance and ninth start of the year. Canelon, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, has struck out 34 batters and walked 12 over 45 innings this season. The righty has logged at least six innings on the bump in each of his last three starts, including wins over Hudson Valley and Lowell. Canelon has allowed righties to hit just .220 on the season, but left-handed hitters have a .356 batting average against him this season.
-FIVE SPIKES HEADED TO NYPL ALL-STAR GAME: Casey Grayson, Leobaldo Pina, Mike Pritchard, Landon Beck and Juan Perez were all selected to the South roster for the 2015 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, as announced by the league on Saturday. The quintet ties a Spikes record for most players headed to the annual showcase of future stars, last set in 2013. The All-Star Game is set to take place on Tuesday, August 18 at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium, home of the Aberdeen IronBirds.
-NEW FACES JOIN SPIKES: The Spikes added two new players today as infielder Michael Massi joined the club from Single-A Peoria and right-handed pitcher Steven De La Cruz came to the squad from Rookie-level Johnson City. Massi, a Mercer product, spent most of his 2015 season at Advanced-A Palm Beach. De La Cruz was leading Johnson City in saves with six when he got called up.
-SPIKE MARKS: State College's five-game winning streak is the longest active string in the NYPL..Landon Beck is tied with Tyler Badamo, who started last night for Brooklyn, for the league lead in strikeouts with 51...Beck has whiffed 24 batters over his last 16 1/3 innings...Pedro Echemendia leads the NYPL with 18 appearances in 2015
