State College Spikes News Release
BROOKLYN, NY - The State College Spikes took their sixth consecutive victory and held on to the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead as Carson Cross, Max Almonte and Tyler Bray combined to shut out the Brooklyn Cyclones on five hits in a 2-0 win on Thursday night at MCU Park.
The Spikes (28-24) maintained a half-game lead on Lowell in the NYPL Wild Card standings, while widening the gap between first and third place to two full games.
Cross (2-2) allowed just three hits and struck out three batters over the first six innings of work. The UConn product notched his first win as a starter, needing just 74 pitches to get through his outing, 57 of them for strikes. Almonte, a native of nearby Long Island, then took over and tossed a scoreless seventh. Bray (2) finished the game with two perfect innings and recorded two strikeouts for the save.
State College took the lead in the second when Orlando Olivera produced a one-hit single, and Jose Godoy notched his first triple of the season to knock him in. The Spikes added an insurance run in the seventh when Ronnierd Garcia singled, advanced to thirs on Godoy's line drive single to right, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jesse Jenner.
Garcia, Thomas Spitz and Craig Aikin all produced multiple hits for the Spikes, with Aikin adding a double.
Brooklyn (25-27) starter Kevin Canelon (4-4) struck out 11 batters, the most for any Spikes' opponent in a single outing this year, but took the loss. Canelon allowed both State College runs on six hits over seven innings of work.
The win also clinched the Spikes' first series victory at MCU Park since 2006.
Friday, State College seeks its seventh win in a row and a sweep of Brooklyn in a 7 p.m. matchup at MCU Park to finish the three-game set. The Spikes will send left-hander Jacob Evans (1-1) to the mound for his second start and 11th appearance of the year. Right-hander Eddie Villasmil (0-0) gets the start for the Cyclones.
The Spikes then return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Saturday to start a big weekend series against the rival West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates). Fans can catch the return of Cowboy Monkey Rodeo, presented by Penn State Federal Credit Union, at Saturday's 7:05 p.m. game against the Black Bears. Plus, fans can enjoy a fantastic post-game FIREWORKS show, and one lucky fan will win the chance to play Lion Country Kia Plinko on the field for a brand new Kia and other great prizes.
Sunday, the skies over Happy Valley will light up like never before with the Pyro Musical FIREWORKS, presented by First National Bank, after the 6:05 p.m. matchup against West Virginia. It's also Star Wars Night at the ballpark, and the Spikes will celebrate the history and heritage of the seat of Centre County with Bellefonte Community Night, presented by Swartz Fire & Safety.
