Lowell Spinners News Release
BATAVIA, NY - Each member of the Lowell Spinners starting nine collected at least one hit as the Spinners slowed the New York-Penn League's hottest team, topping the Batavia Muckdogs, 7-5, Thursday Night at Dwyer Stadium despite a late Muckdogs rally.
The win snapped a Muckdogs winning streak at four and kept the Spinners a half-game back of the Wild Card lead, while pulling the team within a game of the Stedler Division leading Tri-City ValleyCats.
Lowell (28-25) got on the board first in the second inning. Victor Acosta led off the inning with a double to the left-centerfield gap, moving to third on a single by Tucker Tubbs. After a balk scored Acosta and moved Tubbs into scoring position, it appeared the Spinners were in line for a big inning, but the Muckdogs buckled down and held Lowell to just the one run.
The Spinners would extend the lead in the third inning after Jeremy Rivera led off the inning with a double of his own. He took third when Batavia's Galvi Moscat mishandled the ball in right field and would come around to score on Chad De La Guerra's RBI groundout to push the Lowell lead to 2-0.
Batavia (22-29) threatened in the fifth with a little two-out rally. After a pair of quick outs, a pair of singles put runners on the corners. After Kevin Steen walked Stone Garrett on four pitches, Joe Oliver called on Danny Zandona out of the bullpen. Zandona's first three pitches were out of the strike zone, but he bounced back to strike out Brad Haynal and leave the bases loaded to preserve the Lowell lead.
After Zandona pitched the Spinners out of trouble, Lowell extended the lead in the top of the sixth with some two out offense of their own. Back-to-back singles by Josh Ockimey and Tate Matheny with two outs got the offense started and Jhon Nunez plated them both with a double, extending the lead to 4-0.
The Spinners would add a pair of runs in the seventh after singles from De La Guerra and Andrew Benintendi led off the winning. A walk by Acosta loaded the bases, with De La Guerra scoring on an error one batter later. A sacrifice fly by Ockimey put Lowell up, 6-0.
Once Lowell added a run in the top of the ninth on another Acosta run-scoring double, Batavia finally broke through with a pair on Stone Garrett's 10th home run of the season, cutting the Spinners' lead to 7-2.
Batavia would really make things interesting in the bottom of the in ninth, plating three on a bases clearing double by Garrett with two outs before the Spinners closed out the win.
Steen went 4.2 innings in the start, running into trouble with a pair of outs in the fifth. He did not allow a run, allowing four hits while walking a pair and striking out two. Zandona (1-0, 5.82) picked up his first win with 3.1 innings of relief. He allowed two runs on two hits, striking out four. Taylor Nunez struggled, allowing three runs before closing out the win on two hits in his inning of work.
Every member of the Lowell line-up had at least one hit, led by three from Rivera. Acosta had two doubles, while Benintendi also had a two-hit night.
The Spinners look to close out the series and the roadtrip with a win when Austin Glorius will make his second start of the season in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
