Niles, OH (8/13/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers by a score of 3-0 on Thursday evening at Eastwood Field. With the victory, the Renegades saw their record improve to 24-28 while Mahoning Valley falls to 23-28.
The first five innings saw both teams offense's combine for just four hits as Hudson Valley's starting pitcher Benton Moss struck out six batters and scattered three hits during that stretch while Mahoning Valley's Jared Robinson allowed one hit and struck out five.
The Renegades had an opportunity in the top of the sixth inning as Hudson Valley had runners on first and third base with one out. But an inning-ending double play kept the score at 0-0. Moss saw his night come to an end after completing a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning. His took the no-decision while tossing six scoreless innings and struck out seven batters.
Hudson Valley broke the deadlock in the top of the eighth inning as center fielder Angel Moreno led off the frame with a solo home run, giving the Renegades a 1-0 lead. Catcher Taylor Hawkins singled after Moreno's home run and came around to score later in the inning on a RBI single from Michael Russell to extend the lead to 2-0. Then the 'Gades took a 3-0 lead as Russell stole second and scored when Manny Sanchez reached on an error.
Tim Ingram (1-1) threw two innings for Hudson Valley in relief of Moss and picked up the win, as he didn't allow a run over the two frames while striking out one. Diego Castillo picked up his fourth save of the season after pitching a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning. Ryan Perez (0-1) took the loss in relief for Mahoning Valley as he gave up three runs and two earned runs in an inning and a third.
