'Cats Drop Rubber Match to Cyclones
June 21, 2016 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
On a night when Ronnie Dawson hit his first professional home run, the 'Cats could not overcome a two out five run seventh inning by the Cyclones, dropping the rubber match of the series by a final score of 8-3 at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
The ValleyCats scored once in each of the first three innings, the first being an RBI groundout by Marcos Almonte after a lead-off triple by Stephen Wrenn to begin the ballgame.
In the second, a Randy Cesar homer put the 'Cats up 2-0, and in the third, Astros 2016 second round draft selection Ronnie Dawson picked up his first professional home run to give the 'Cats a 3-0 lead.
Brooklyn got them all back in the bottom of the fourth off of 'Cats starting pitcher Sebastian Kessay, who allowed the three earned runs, four hits, four strikeouts and two walks in his four innings of work.
The inning began with back-to-back walks to Cyclones first baseman Darryl Knight, and shortstop Colby Woodmansee. The Cyclones would then load the bases for Gene Cone, who cleared them with a double to the right field corner, knotting the score at 3-3.
Framer Valdez came on in relief of Kessay in the fifth, and worked two scoreless innings before things began to unravel for the 'Cats.
With two outs and Cyclones baserunners on first and second, back-to-back singles plated them both to give Brooklyn a 5-3 lead.
Dan Rizzie then doubled to left to score two more runs to put the Cyclones up 7-3. Brooklyn scored their eighth run on a fielding error by second baseman Rodrigo Ayarza, the 'Cats third error of the ballgame.
After the three runs early in the ballgame given up by Cyclones starting pitcher Erik Manoah, both he and reliever Raul Jacobson shut down the 'Cats bats the rest of the way. Tri-City picked up just two hits through the final six innings of the ballgame.
The 'Cats return to the friendly confines of Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Wednesday night to open a three game set versus the Vermont Lake Monsters. First pitch each night is 7:00pm.
Wednesday is 50 Cent Hot Dog Night presented by Helmbold's Hot Dogs, Thursday is Superhero Night presented by Maria College with postgame fireworks presented by Market 32, and Friday is Youth Baseball Night presented by BlueShield of Northeastern New York and Hannaford Supermarkets.
Tickets are available online at tcvalleycats.com, by calling 518-629-CATS, or visiting the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium box office.
