Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
(Auburn, NY) - For the second straight night, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers' offense was held in check by the Auburn Doubledays. After a leadoff double to start the game, Doubledays starter Westin Davis retired 15 straight batters as the Scrappers were shutout for the first time this season, 5-0.
After Mejia doubled on the first pitch of the game the Scrappers would go in order until the top of the seventh inning when Erlin Cerda was hit by a pitch. The hit by pitch snapped a stretch of 18 straight retired by Dobulday pitching.
Auburn would strike for two runs in the first inning to play from ahead for the second straight night. After Daniel Johnson reached on a fielder's chouice, Sheldon Neuse walked. Both runners would come in to score on Randy Encarnacion's RBI single.
In the bottom of the third inning the Doubledays would take advantage of a Scrappers error to push across three more runs. Black Perkins started the inning reaching on a Luke Wakamatsu fielding error. Johnson would then single before Neuse drove in both runners with a two run triple.
The Scrappers would not get another baserunner until the top of the seventh inning. After Cerda was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Emmanuel Tapia would also reach with a walk. Todd Isaacs picked up the Scrappers only other hit with a bunt single in the eighth inning. Logan Ice and Wakamatsu would each walk once over the final two innings to provide the only other runners for the Scrappers.
Ryan Colegate (0-1) started and took the loss for the Scrappers. He went three innings while allowing five hits and five runs, four of which were earned. Colegate walked one and struck out one. Leandro Linares, Michael Letkweitz and Henry Martinez would finish the game with five scoreless innings combined.
The Scrappers (1-4) now head to Williamsport, PA to start a three game set with the Crosscutters. First pitch on Wednesday night is set for 7:05pm with Micah Miniard (0-0, 5.79) getting the start. The Scrappers return home on Saturday, June 25th for Bo Pelini Bobblehead night and YSU night. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
