Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
BROOKLYN, NY - It took 17 long innings, six plus hours, and every single one of their 10 runs for the ValleyCats to pull out a narrow victory over the Brooklyn Cyclones on Tuesday morning, by a final score of 10-9.
Just one half inning earlier, the ballgame was tied 6-6.
In the top of the 17th inning, with Cyclones infielder Santo Marte on the mound for his second inning work, ValleyCats third baseman Kolbey Carpenter reached base with a two out single to left. Marcos Almonte followed up with a double to put runners on second and third, and Daz Cameron delivered a two run go-ahead single to left to give the 'Cats an 8-6 lead.
The next batter, Stephen Wrenn, launched a long two-run home run over the left field wall to extend the 'Cats lead to 10-6, which seemed at that point to be plenty of insurance runs. The Cyclones would have something to say about that, however.
In the bottom half of the 17th, the Cyclones began the inning with three consecutive singles. After a throwing error and wild pitch, Brooklyn cut the lead in half, and now trailed 10-8.
The 'Cats sixth pitcher of the game, Luis Ramirez, was able to strike out Brooklyn shortstop Dale Burdick for the first out of the inning, but things continued to get a bit more tense.
The Cyclones cut the deficit to 10-9 on a fielder's choice, and followed that up with a double to put runners on second and third with two outs. An intentional walk loaded the bases for the Cyclones, but that's where the threat and ballgame would end.
Ramirez was able to strike out Brandon Brosher looking for the third out, causing everyone on the ValleyCats ballclub to breathe a big sigh of relief.
Just one inning earlier, the Cyclones had another prime chance to win the ballgame, loading the bases with one out. Ramirez also was able to work out of that jam by inducing a ground out and strike out.
The ValleyCats offense had a plethora of chances to drive in the go-ahead run, putting runners on base from the ninth inning on.
The Cyclones scored first in the bottom of the second inning off of 'Cats pitcher Ricardo Castro, on a two out RBI single by left fielder Hengelbert Rojas.
Castro relieved ValleyCats starting pitcher Brett Adcock, who threw just an inning and a third due to a strict pitch count. Adcock, the Astros 4th round pick out Michigan, was making his professional debut with the 'Cats. He struck out three batters and walked one in his abbreviated outing.
Tri-City scored twice in the third, but the lead wouldn't last for long. Brooklyn tied the ballgame 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning on a two out RBI single by Jacob Zanon.
The next scoring opportunity for either team came in sixth inning, for the 'Cats. Ronnie Dawson singled with one out for his first professional hit, and Taylor Jones followed with a double to left to put runners on second and third for the 'Cats hottest hitter Carmen Benedetti.
He wouldn't disappoint, roping a double over the centerfielder's head to score Dawson and Jones and put his club on top 4-2.
Brooklyn wasted no time reclaiming the lead, scoring four times in the bottom half of the sixth to take a two run advantage of their own.
The 'Cats cut into the lead in the 7th inning, and tied the ballgame at 6-6 in the eighth. That's how the score would remain for the next eight innings.
At one point, ValleyCats hurlers retired 17 consecutive Cyclones batters, led by Cuban native Carlos Sierra who was perfect for 3 2/3 innings.
The first extra innings jam for the 'Cats came in the bottom of the 13th, as the Cyclones loaded the bases with one out on an error and a pair of walks. Sierra worked out of trouble by inducing a ground ball to end the threat.
Stephen Wrenn went 3-for-9 for the 'Cats with four RBI, and what proved to be the game winning home run. Carmen Benedetti finished the game 3-for-8 with a double and two runs batted in. Daz Cameron also drove in a pair of runs.
Luis Ramirez (1-0) picked up the win for Tri-City, who improved to 2-2 on the young 2016 New York-Penn League season. The ValleyCats will take on the Cyclones Wednesday night in the rubber game of the series.
LHP Sebastian Kessay takes the mound for the 'Cats, opposite Cyclones righty Erik Manoah. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
