Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - The Vermont Lake Monsters scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and earn their first New York-Penn League win of the season with a 5-1 victory over the Connecticut Tigers Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.
The Lake Monsters scored the four runs in the eighth without the benefit of an RBI as two runs scored on errors, one on a wild pitch and another on a bases loaded walk. Steven Pallares got the rally started with a walk and advanced to second on a Jhonny Rodriguez single to rightfield before scoring from second when righfielder Joey Havrilak could not field a Miguel Mercedes single cleanly. Rodriguez would then score on a wild pitch and Mercedes crossed the plate on a two-out throwing error for a 4-1 Vermont lead. The Lake Monsters tacked on one more run on a Luis Barrera bases loaded walk.
Vermont had jumped out on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on back-to-back leadoff singles from Barrera and Pallares before a Rodriguez one-out sacrfice fly. Lake Monsters starter Xavier Altamirano kept the lead at 1-0 as he shutout the Tigers on just two hits with no walks and six strikeouts over his five innings of work. Connecticut did tie the game in the eighth on a Victor Padron two-out RBI single.
Lake Monsters reliever Tyler Willman (1) came on with the game tied at one and runners at first and second with two outs in the eighth to record the final out of the inning, then tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn the victory. Tigers reliever Emmanuel Chavez (0-1) was charged with four runs (two earned) on three hits in 2/3 of an inning to take the loss. Rodriguez and Barrera both had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for Vermont (1-4), while Padron had two of the four hits in the game for Connecticut (3-2).
Vermont heads down to Tri-City to open a three-game series against the ValleyCats on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. The Lake Monsters will return to Centennial Field for a six-game homestand beginning on Saturday against the Staten Island Yankees.
