Cyclones Lose A Wild One In 17 Innings

BROOKLYN, NY - Coney Island has long been known for the Freak Show - usually associated with bearded ladies, sword swallowers and fire breathers - but in the early going of the 2016 season, the Brooklyn Cyclones may be giving them a run for their money. For the second time in four days the Brooklyn Cyclones played a game that seemed like it would never come to an end. Eventually the Tri-City ValleyCats held on for a 10-9 win in 17 innings, as the Cyclones left the bases loaded for the third time in extra innings.

The game started off innocently enough. The Brooklyn bats were swinging early in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd. Catcher Ali Sanchez started the rally with a line-drive single to right field and Jay Jabs followed with a one out walk to put a pair of runners aboard. After ValleyCats starter Brad Adcock was chased from the game due to his pitch count, Hengelbert Rojas roped a single to right field that plated Sanchez with the game's first run.

Tri City immediately responded, putting two runs on the board and took a 2-1 lead. Daz Cameron, son of former New York Mets outfielder Mike Cameron, had an RBI single and alter scored on an errant pickoff throw from Brooklyn starter Joel Huertas. The see-saw scoring continued in the bottom of the frame when Brooklyn would draw even. Nick Sergakis had a two-out double and moved to third on a balk before Jacob Zanon legged out an infield single that allowed the former Buckeye to score and tie things up at 2-2.

LHP Joel Huertas made the start for the Cyclones and was solid early, but ran into trouble in the top of the sixth. The southpaw surrendered an infield single to Ronnie Dawson to start the threat before Taylor Jones doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Carmen Benedetti then chased the pair home with a booming double to right field, to give the 'Cats a 4-2 lead and chase Huertas from the game.

The Cyclones then retaliated in their next turn at-bat, with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. First baseman Darryl Knight walked and advanced to second with Dan Rizzie was hit by a pitch. As he had done earlier in the game, Rojas collected his second RBI of the night after a single on a soft line drive to right field plated Knight, and inched the Cyclones closer, making the score 4-3. With Dale Burdick at the plate, and runners on the corners, Rojas broke for second base and when the ValleyCats threw down to second Rizzie came rumbling home to knot the game at 4-4. After Burdick worked a walk, Enmanuel Zabala singled to plate Rojas and give Brooklyn a 5-4 lead that would swell one batter later when Sergakis ripped an RBI double to left field that made it 6-4.

But the ValleyCats came clawing back. Scoring a single run in the seventh and eighth to tie things up and, for the third time in four games, send us into extra innings.

In extra frames, the teams traded zeroes - with Brooklyn squandering two bases loaded situations in the 13th and 16th innings - until the top of the 17th. Brooklyn ran out of pitching options and called on infielder Santo Marte to take over on the mound. After a scoreless 16th inning, Marte found himself in trouble in the 17th. A single and a double put runners on second and third with two outs for Daz Cameron, who had struck out in five straight at-bats. But this time the outfielder stroked a two-run single into left field and would later come home on Stephen Wrenn's two-run shot that made it 10-6 in favor of the ValleyCats.

But things were far from over. Knight, Jabs and Rizzie put together consecutive singles in the bottom of the frame that produced a run and put runners on the corners. Rojas then reached on an error, producing another run, and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Luis Ramirez, the Tri-City reliever, then uncorked a wild pitch that moved the tying run to second base with nobody out. Dale Burdick struck out for the first out and Zabala reached on an RBI fielder's choice that made it 10-9. Nick Sergakis continued his solid night with a double to right field that pushed Zabala to third base with the tying run. Jacob Zanon was then walked to load the bases for Brandon Brosher, who took over behind the plate for Ali Sanchez earlier in extra frames, and for the second time in as many innings Brosher struck out with the bags full, this time ending the game.

The game lasted a whopping 6:05 minutes and featured, 585 pitches thrown. The 17-inning marathon goes down as the third longest game in franchise history, and the second game to go at least 17 innings in four days.

These same two teams will meet up on Tuesday evening with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will go home with a Bucket Hat courtesy of SUNY Downstate.
