Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - The Tri-City ValleyCats twice rebounded from deficits of at least two runs, but fell 8-7 to the Vermont Lake Monsters in a back-and-forth game at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vt., on Friday night.

Tri-City took the first lead, when Keach Ballard reached on a bunt single in the top of the second inning that was misplayed by Lake Monsters third baseman Ryan Howell, causing Anthony Hermelyn to score, before Johnny Sewald drove home Pat Porter on a ground ball to the second baseman to put the 'Cats up 2-0.

However, Vermont scored three times in the bottom of the second, and twice in the bottom of the third, to jump ahead 5-2.

Tri-City managed to tie the game in the top of the fourth, when Sewald scored on a Lake Monsters error, Dexture McCall drove home Brooks Marlow on a RBI force out, and Bobby Wernes doubled down the right-field line to score Aaron Mizell. But the tie didn't last long, as Vermont grabbed the lead once more in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run that put them ahead 7-5.

That score stood until the top of the eighth inning, when Sewald scored on a single by Kolbey Carpenter, and McCall brought home Mizell with a RBI fielder's choice to even up the score at 7-7.

Unfortunately, the Lake Monsters pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth, when Vermont second baseman hit a ground ball to the left side of the infield that brought home right fielder Steven Pallares, giving the host squad a 8-7 walk-off victory.

The ValleyCats will return to Centennial field at 6:05 p.m., on Saturday evening, for the final contest in this three-game set. On the mound for ValleyCats will be RHP Ryan Deemes (1-0, 1.86), with RHP Kyle Friedrichs (1-3, 5.40) getting the start for the Lake Monsters.
