Black Bears Fall to Mahoning Valley 6-1

The West Virginia Black Bears were defeated by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers by a score of 6-1 on Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. After tonight's loss, the Black Bears fall to 35-31 this season while Mahoning Valley falls to 29-35 overall. Despite dropping tonight's game, the Black Bears still hold the top spot in the Wild Card standings with a 0.5 lead over the State College Spikes.

The Scrappers struck first in tonight's game after hitting three doubles and crossing two runs in the second inning giving Mahoning Valley a 2-0 lead.

West Virginia answered back in the bottom half of the inning when 1B Albert Baur reached on a throwing error to lead off the inning, advancing to second. While 2B Logan Ratledge was at the plate, Baur advanced to third on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, CF Casey Hughston hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Baur from third to cut the Mahoning Valley lead to 2-1. But, for the rest of the game it was all Scrappers.

Mahoning Valley added on two more runs in the seventh inning on four hits to jump out to a 4-1 lead. The Scrappers added on two more runs in the ninth to go ahead 6-1 and the Black Bears threatened by loading the bases in the bottom half but were unable to score to allow the Scrappers to hang on to win 6-1.

SP Dario Agrazal pitched 5.0 strong innings, allowing two runs (earned) on four hits while striking out three but was saddled with the loss (5-5). RP Tanner Anderson made his Black Bears debut and pitched 2.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. RP Eric Dorsch pitched the final 2.0 innings of the game while yielding two runs on three hits. Mahoning Valley reliever Matt Esparza picked up the win (3-0) after tossing 4.2 scoreless innings of relief and striking out five West Virginia batters.

The Black Bears and Scrappers will conclude the series on Saturday, August 29 at Monongalia County Ballpark with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m. SP Bret Helton (2-5, 5.24) will be on the mound for West Virginia as he looks to keep the Black Bears in the top spot of the Wild Card standings.
