Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Lake Monsters got a walkoff win for the second straight night against the Stedler Division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats as Steven Pallares scored from second base on a fielding error by shortstop Keach Ballard to give Vermont an 8-7 New York-Penn League victory Friday night at historic Centennial Field.

Pallares got the winning rally started with a one-out single in the ninth and advanced to second when Richie Martin was hit by a pitch. Trace Loehr followed with a groundball to shortstop that went off Ballard into short leftfield allowing Pallares to come around for the Lake Monsters third walkoff win in their last five home games. It was also Vermont's eight win in their last 10 games at Centennial, giving the Lake Monsters a 17-17 record at home.

After Tri-City had scored a pair of runs in the second inning, the Lake Monsters responded with three of their own in the bottom of the second. Tom Gavitt got a bases loaded infield single for his first Vermont hit, while Ryan Howell and Steven Pallares each had a sacrifice fly. The Lake Monsters added two more runs in the third on RBI doubles from both Seth Brown and Brett Siddall for a 5-2 lead.

The ValleyCats tied the game 5-5 with three runs in the top of the fourth, including a game-tying Bobby Wernes RBI double, but again Vermont quickly retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Gavitt double and a Howell two-run homer. it was Howell's fourth home run of the season, tying him for the team lead with Chris Iriart and Seong-min Kim.

Things settled down from there for a few innings as neither team scored again until the eighth inning when Tri-City plated a couple of runs to tie the game at 7-7. Kolbey Carpenter cut the deficit to one run with an RBI single and the ValleyCats tied the game as Aaron Mizell scored as Dexture McCall just beat out a potential inning-ending double play at first base.

Gavitt was 2-for-4 with a run, double and RBI in his Centennial Field debut, while Iriart and Loehr both had two hits. Reliever Derek Beasley allowed just one hit with one walk and three strikeouts over 3 2/3 scoreless innings, while John Gorman (1-2) allowed the two runs in the eighth before working a scoreless ninth to earn the win. Vermot starter Dustin Driver struggled with his control as he walked eight in 3 1/3 innings, while allowing five runs (just one earned) and striking out two.

Tri-City starter Jose Hernandez allowed seven runs on eighth hits in three-plus innings, while releiver Harold Arauz just two hits with one walk and four strikeouts in four scoreless innings. Yeyfry Del Rosario(3-4) gave up the winning run on one hit and two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Vermont (28-36) will look to complete the three-game sweep of the ValleyCats on Saturday as former Vermont Expos and Major League shortstop Orlando Cabrera will be at the ballpark signing autographs when the gates open at 5:00 pm and throw out the first pitch before the 6:05 game.
