'Cats Comeback Bid Falls Short in Loss to Tigers
June 28, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
NORWICH, CT - Brooks Marlow hit his first professional home run, while Keach Ballard had two hits and two runs batted in, but the Tri-City ValleyCats were not able to keep pace with the Connecticut Tigers, falling 7-6 on Saturday evening at Thomas Dodd Stadium, in Norwich, Conn.
The 'Cats were the first to get on the board, taking a 2-0 lead when Marlow drove a 2-1 pitch from Tigers left-hander Matt Hall over the right field wall for a two-run homer.
The Tigers then went ahead in the bottom half of the third, taking a 3-2 lead when Connecticut shortstop Keaton Jones followed up an RBI by catcher Arvicent Perez with a two-run home run to left field.
With the Tigers lead stretched to 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning, Tri-City center fielder Johnny Sewald doubled. Then on the first pitch to Brooks Marlow, Sewald stole third base, and ran home as the pitch escaped from Perez, bringing the 'Cats back to within one run.
After Connecticut scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 5-3, Drew Ferguson hit a single to left field to drive home Kolbey Carpenter, then Ballard hit a two-run single to right field, driving home Pat Porter and Garret Stubbs to put the 'Cats on top by the score of 6-5.
Unfortunately, the Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, to take the lead back once more, and this time for good.
Tri-City and Connecticut will face off again tomorrow in the second game of a three-game series. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be RHP Elieser Hernandez (0-0, 0.00), with RHP Chase Edwards (0-1, 9.00) getting the start for the Tigers.
