Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (3-6) defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats (5-5) 7-6 as they welcomed eleven members from the Detroit Tigers 2015 draft class on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers sent sixth round draft pick Matt Hall to the mound to get things started. Hall was impressive in his two innings of work allowing just two runs in four innings.
After neither teams scored in the first two innings Tri-City broke the scoreless tie. With one-out and Johnny Sewald on first, second basemen Brooks Marlow launched a two-run homerun to right that gave the ValleyCats a 2-0 lead.
Connecticut, who loaded the bases in each of the first two innings but did not score, answered back in the bottom half of the third. They put runners on first and third with nobody out and when catcher Arvicent Perez grounded into a fielder's choice the Tigers where on the board down just 2-1. Connecticut then took the lead one batter later as Keaton Jones blasted a two-run homerun to left making it 3-2 Connecticut.
With the game now 5-3 Connecticut in the top of the sixth Tri-City loaded the bases with one-out. Oswaldo Castillo entered the game to replace Gregory Soto and was welcomed into the game rudely. Left fielder Drew Ferguson singled to drive in a run and then shortstop Keach Ballard gave Tri-City a 6-5 lead with a two RBI single just a few pitches later.
The Tigers however would not be done. In the bottom of the seventh with Zac Person on the mound Connecticut retook the lead 6-5. First they tied the game when right fielder Joey Havrilak scored on a wild pitch. Then with two-outs and Jones on second center fielder Victor Padron drove in the go ahead run. For Padron it was his fourth hit of the day and second RBI.
Tri-City put two runners on in the eighth but Jordan Smith was able to enter the game and put out the flame, getting both batters he faced. Smith then retired the side in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
