Granville, WV (6/28/15)- Paced by a pair of home runs by first baseman Hector Montes, the Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the West Virginia Black Bears by a score of 11-5 on Sunday at Monongalia County Ballpark.
Hudson Valley picked up a run in the top of the first inning as shortstop Michael Russell and right fielder Manny Sanchez singled with two-outs and Russell came across to score on a wild pitch. The Renegades doubled their lead in the top of the second inning as designated hitter Cade Gotta and catcher Taylor Hawkins hit back-to-back doubles, Hawkins's of the RBI variety.
The Black Bears cut the Renegades lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by right fielder Logan Hill. But Hudson Valley responded immediately in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by Montes after Russell reached on an error, giving the Renegades a 4-1 advantage.
Montes gave Hudson Valley an 8-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a grand slam after a double from center fielder Angel Moreno and a pair of walks to Russell and right fielder Manny Sanchez. West Virginia picked up two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on first baseman Albert Baur's RBI double and a RBI single from catcher Christian Kelley. The Black Bears cut the Renegades lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI triple by left fielder Ty Moore and scored on an RBI ground out by Hill.
Hudson Valley scored three more runs in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI singles by Sanchez and Montes along with an RBI sacrifice fly by third baseman Alex Schmidt. That gave Montes seven RBI on the day along with his two home runs.
The win for Hudson Valley snapped a three-game losing streak and improved the Renegades record to 5-4 while the Black Bears dropped to 4-5. Roel Ramirez (2-0) was strong on the mound for the Renegades and earned the win after allowing just one run on one hit in six innings of work. Jonathan Brubaker (0-2) took the loss for West Virginia, giving up four runs and two earned runs in four innings.
Notes: Hector Montes set many new professional firsts and career highs after Sunday's performance. It was Montes's first professional multi-home run game and the six RBI gave him a new career high for most runs driven in for one game. Also the grand slam home run that he hit in the fifth inning was his first grand slam hit as a professional.
The Renegades face West Virginia in game two of their three-game series on Monday June 29 with first pitch at 7:05pm. Hudson Valley returns home on Wednesday, July 1 as they host the Brooklyn Cyclones at 7:05pm. Wednesday evening is "American Road Trip Night" at Dutchess Stadium.
