Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (3-6) fell to the Williamsport Crosscutters (9-0) 5-3 at Eastwood Field on Sunday afternoon.

The bats began to warm up a little bit, as the Scrappers finished with three runs on six hits. The pitching avoided a difficult afternoon by only giving up three extra base hits. The pitching staff only allowed two walks, both from switch pitcher Ryan Perez, who worked only with the left arm on Sunday.

Both teams scored in the first inning. Venn Biter scored on an RBI single for Brendon Hayden. In the bottom of the first, Willi Castro scored when Emmanuel Tapia reached on an error by shortstop Grenny Cumana. In the top of the third, Biter scored again on a wild pitch from Scrappers' starter Jared Robinson.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tapia scored on an RBI single by Nate Winfrey. Winfrey also hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game 3-3.

Williamsport took over in the top of the 10th. Jan Hernandez scored on an error by Castro. He committed his sixth error of the season on Sunday. Austin Bossart scored on an RBI groundout by Cumana.

W - Zgardowski (1-0) L - Stokes (0-1) S - Sequeira (1)

Scrappers and Crosscutters play the second game of their three-game series on Monday night at 7:05. Luis Morales gets the start for Williamsport, while Mahoning Valley will send Kieran Lovegrove to the mound.
