Cyclones Out-Slug Auburn, 6-5 on Sunday

AUBURN, NY - June 28, 2015 - The Cyclones bats brought the thunder and then mother nature brought the rain as Brooklyn defeated the Auburn Doubledays by the score of 6-5 in a rain-shortened, six inning game on Sunday evening. Michal Katz went 2-for-3 with his second home run in as many games, while Jeff Diehl added a 2-for-3 effort and an RBI and is now hitting .429 on the season.

Brooklyn and Auburn matched zeroes in the first and second innings before the Cyclones drew first blood in the top of the third. Branden Kaupe started the threat by reaching on a throwing error that put him in scoring position with one out. Vinny Siena took advantage of the scoring chance with a booming double into the right field corner, scoring Kaupe with the game's first run, before moving to third when Doubledays rightfielder Randy Encarnacion didn't field the carom cleanly. After Michael Bernal struck out for the second out of the inning, Brooklyn's bats really came to life. David Thomspon ripped a single off the glove of Auburn's second baseman, Dalton Dulin, which trickled into the outfield to make it 2-0 Cyclones. After Thompson advanced to second on a wild pitch, Katz lined an RBI single to right field and later came around to score when Jeff Diehl crushed a double off the right field wall to make it 4-0 in favor of the Cyclones.

Cyclones starter Mike Gibbons (2-0) didn't have his best stuff on Sunday, but was able to work around trouble early on but in the bottom of the third, Auburn was able to break through. The Doubledays started the frame with three straight singles to load the bases with nobody out. Gibbons was able to induce a ground ball from Dalton Dulin, which led to a force out at the plate, for out number one. The righthander was able to strike out Matthew Page for out number two, and was on the verge of escaping the jam. But David Kerian singled to right field, scoring two, and Jackson Reetz followed with and RBI single that made it 4-3 at the end of three.

An inning later, Kelvin Gutierrez led off the fourth with a solo home run to draw the Doubledays even at 4-4. But Brooklyn bounced back quickly, in the top of the fifth, with what proved to be a game-deciding blow. Michael Bernal worked a one-out walk from Auburn pitcher Mattt Crownover (0-1), and after David Thompson flied out for out number two, Michael Katz sent a 2-1 offering over the left field wall to put Brooklyn back in front 6-4. For Katz it was his second home run in as many games, and the former William & Mary standout now has nine RBI through the first nine games of the season.

The Doubledays sliced into the Brooklyn lead in the bottom of the frame, with a two-out single Jakson Reetz, but Gibbons was able to avoid any further damage and send the game into the sixth with Brooklyn leading 6-5. And that's when the rains came. Enmanuel Zabala was hit by a pitch to start the sixth, and Alfredo Reyes struck out but that's when the umpires would call for the tarp and the game would not resume.

The Cyclones will look to continue their winning ways on Monday evening when they take on the Doubledays in the middle game of the three-game set. RHP Matt Blackham (1-0) will look to build on his impressive first start for Brooklyn.
