Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - Auburn fell to Brooklyn 6-5 in five innings as rain fell down onto Falcon Park and ended the Doubledays chance at a comeback.
The two teams fought back and forth throughout the five innings. After a scoreless first and second, both teams finally scored in the third.
With one out in the top of the third, Branden Kaupe reached first on a throwing error by shortstop Edwin Lora that went into the stands and allowed Kaupe to advance to second. The next batter, Vincent Siena, sent a double into the right field corner that was bobbled by rightfielder Randy Encarnacion, allowing Kaupe to score from first and Siena to advance to third.
Michael Bernal struck out swinging, but David Thompson then stepped up and drove in Siena from third on a single to second baseman Dalton Dulin. With Michael Katz batting, Auburn's starting pitcher Erick Fedde threw a wild pitch, which allowed Thompson to advance to second. Katz drove in Thompson later in the at bat with a single to right. The scoring ended for the Cyclones when Jeff Diehl smacked a double into right to score Katz from first.
In the bottom of the third, the Doubledays responded. Ian Sagdal, Edwin Lora, and Andrew Stevenson led off with back-to-back-to-back singles. Dalton Dulin stepped up next, but grounded into a fielder's choice and Sagdal was thrown out at home. After Matthew Page struck out, David Kerian singled in Lora and Stevenson while Dulin advanced to third. Jakson Reetz stepped up next and singled in Dulin from third with a base hit to left field.
Down by one in the bottom of the fourth, Kelvin Gutierrez stepped in. The third baseman swung at the second pitch he saw and launched his first home run of the season over the left field wall to tie the game up at four.
The next half inning, Matthew Crownover replaced Erick Fedde on the mound. He struck out Siena and walked Bernal to lead off the inning. After Thompson flew out to left, Katz stepped in and homered to left to give Brooklyn a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dalton Dulin led off with a double down the left field line. A couple batters later, Reetz drove in Dulin for the second time, but this time it was with a single to right field.
After Gutierrez popped out to second to end the fifth, the rain began to fall even harder. In the top of the 6th, Crownover hit Enmanuel Zabala to lead off the inning, but then struck out Alfredo Reyes. Natanael Ramos stepped up to face Crownover next, but his at bat was ended early and a rain delay started. About 30 minutes later, the game was called and Brooklyn was awarded the 6-5 five inning victory.
Game two of the series starts at 7:05 PM tomorrow night between Auburn and Brooklyn at Falcon Park.
