Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Frank Castillo allowed just one run through seven strong innings to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes (45-37) to their third straight victory Friday night; a 3-1 decision over the Omaha Royals (38-44) at Rosenblatt Stadium. For the second straight night, the âTopes offense made the Royals pay for some costly mistakes that led to two unearned runs. With the win, Albuquerque improved to 11-3 against Omaha in 2005.
Castillo (7-4) retired the side in order in the first, fifth, and seventh innings in his longest outing since May 21. In all, the right hander allowed five hits, struck out four, and walked three. Randy Messenger worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fifth save of 2005. Kyle Snyder (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Omaha despite allowing two runs - one earned - in five innings.
Jason Wood got the âTopes on the board with an RBI-single to center field in the fourth that scored Joe Dillon, who doubled to lead off the inning. Omaha responded in the home half when Chris Truby plated Paul Phillips, who finished with three hits, on a base hit that tied the game at 1. Chris Aguila manufactured a run in the following frame to put Albuquerque back on top. With one out, Aguila beat out an infield single, took second on a throwing error, stole third, and crossed the dish on a sacrifice fly by Josh Wilson to make it 2-1.
The âTopes took advantage of another costly Omaha error in the seventh. Derek Wathan got things started with a single through the left side of the infield, stole second and then moved to third when second baseman Denny Hocking misplayed the catcher Phillip's throw. Wilson followed with his second sacrifice fly of the night to stake the Albuquerque to a two-run lead.
The Isotopes, who maintained their four-game lead over second place Oklahoma in the American Conference Southern Division, will take on the Royals again Saturday with right-hander Ariel Prieto (4-4, 5.53) facing Omaha lefty Chris George (6-4, 4.76) in the third game of a four game series in Nebraska before returning home on July 4 for a special Independence Day holiday celebration. Standing room only tickets are still available for a great evening of âTopes baseball followed by the best fireworks in Albuquerque presented by First State Bank and KASA Fox 2. The Isotopes will also be sporting special Independence Day jerseys that will be auctioned after the game with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross.
The holiday kicks off a seven game homestand that is packed with great giveaways and promotions, including another appearance by the Zooperstars!, free sport bags, and mini-bat giveaways. Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
