Sidewinders fall to Grizzlies, 11-8

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Sidewinders fell to the Fresno Grizzlies 11-8 Friday night at Tucson Electric Park. Fresno jumped ahead hitting scoring 3 runs on 2 home runs against Sidewinders starting RHP Edgar Gonzalez and led 3-0. The Sidewinders bounced back and scored 5 unanswered runs and led 5-3 after 5 innings. The Grizzlies answered back in the 6th though as the Sidewinders gave up 5 runs in the top half of the inning and Fresno took the lead for good 8-5. Tempers flared in the bottom half of the 6th as pinch hitter Scott Hairston appeared to beat out a throw from SS Mickey Lopez but was called out. Hairston expressed his displeasure with the call and was ejected as both Manger Chip Hale and 1B coach Lorenzo Bundy came to his defense. The Sidewinders closed the gap to one run in the bottom of the 7th 8-7. The Sidewinders couldn't get any closer though, losing 11-8 despite out hitting the Grizzlies 15 to 12.

Starting RHP Edgar Gonzalez struggled in 6 innings of work, giving up 8 runs, 7 earned, on 8 hits with a walk and 4 strikeouts. Gonzalez allowed 3 home runs in the game which was the most of for him in any outing this season. The loss drops Gonzalez to 6-3 on the season with a 4.47 ERA.

One Fresno Grizzlie got in on the Sidewinders promotional fun late in the game. Fresno rehabbing relief pitcher LaTroy Hawkins took the field in between the 8th and 9th inning to participate in the Sidewinders sumo wrestling. Hawkins and a Sidewinders intern wrestled in inflatable sumo suits as the 8,003 fans in attendance enjoyed the unusual appearance.

The Sidewinders dropped to 40-42 on the year with the loss and 3-2 on the current home stand. The Sidewinders and Grizzlies play game 3 of the 4-game set tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 7 PM with fireworks to follow at Tucson Electric Park. The scheduled starting pitchers are LHP Jon Cannon (2-3, 4.72) for Tucson and LHP Patrick Mish (2-7, 5.89) for Fresno.
