Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Beavers today added 14-year major league veteran Pedro Astacio to their active roster.

Astacio, 35, agreed to terms with Portland's parent club, the San Diego Padres, on a minor league contract on Thursday and joined the Beavers in Las Vegas today. Astacio, a right-handed pitcher, was 2-8 with a 6.04 ERA in 12 starts with the Texas Rangers to begin the season. He was designated for assignment by Texas on June 17 and released on June 21.

Over parts of 14 major league seasons, Astacio has pitched for the Dodgers (1992-97), Rockies (1997-2001), Astros (2001), Mets (2002-03), Red Sox (2004) and Rangers. He has a career record of 120-117 and a 4.66 ERA in 363 major league games (316 starts).

Astacio began his professional career in 1988 after signing with the Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent. He marked his major league debut with Los Angeles in 1992.

Astacio spent most of the 2004 season recovering from surgery to his right shoulder, eventually signing with the Red Sox organization. The right-hander appeared in 10 games at four different levels of the Red Sox chain during the season, including five appearances (1 start) with Boston.

Coming into the 2005 season, Astacio ranked 18th among active major league pitchers with 1,544 career strikeouts.

Astacio will join the Beavers rotation and get his first start with the club on Sunday as they close out their road trip in Las Vegas.

Also on Friday, the Beavers placed right-handed pitcher Miguel Asencio on the disabled list with a strained right elbow. Asencio, who missed the entire 2004 season after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery, is 0-3 with a 9.42 ERA in three starts with Portland this season.

The Beavers active roster is now at 23 players.
