RedHawks survive Iowa rally

Catcher Gerald Laird helped the RedHawks build their lead and relief pitcher Erasmo Ramirez made sure the kept it Friday at SBC Bricktown Ballpark.

Laird had a home run and two RBIs and Ramirez stranded two runners in scoring position in the ninth inning as the Oklahoma RedHawks beat the Iowa Cubs 6-5.

Iowa struck first with a two-run home run by Nate Frese in the second inning. The RedHawks countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to claim the lead.

The RedHawk lead was stretched to 4-2 with Laird's solo home run in the fourth inning. However, the Cubs tied the game in the sixth on Micah Hoffpauir's two-run double.

Laird gave the RedHawks the lead again in the bottom of the inning when his single brought home Jason Conti. Laird advanced to second base and Manny Alexander scored after the throw by Frese went into the Iowa dugout.

In the ninth, Justin Thompson got Hoffpauir to ground out before giving up a single to center field by Nate Frese. The RedHawks then brought in Jose Veras, who gave up a run after a walk, a single and a balk.

With the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second, Veras struck out Trenidad Hubbard. The RedHawks then brought in the left-handed Ramirez to face left-handed batting Mike Fontenot. Ramirez got Fontenot to ground out to first base to end the game.

The RedHawks and Cubs will meet again at 7:05 Saturday at SBC Bricktown Ballpark.

A statue of Oklahoma baseball great Warren Spahn will be unveiled at 5:30 at the entrance in Deep Right. The first 2,500 fans receive a replica of the statue.
