Fourth of July fireworks show highlights big homestand at PGE Park

PORTLAND, Ore. - Nothing says summer more than the Fourth of July and baseball. With that in mind, the Portland Beavers kick off a big seven-game homestand at PGE Park on Monday, July 4, with a host of activities in store, including their traditional post-game fireworks show on Independence Day.

The July 4 home game has become a staple on the Beavers schedule. Once again this year, the team will put the exclamation point on their annual Fourth of July celebration with a special post-game fireworks show at PGE Park as Portland takes on the rival Tacoma Rainiers. First pitch is 7:05 p.m., and the traditional fireworks display will immediately follow the game.

There is no additional charge to view the post-game fireworks, and tickets for the game range from $7 to $12.

A number of additional activities, including carnival games and a special new Oregon quarter exchange, will add to the Independence Day atmosphere at PGE Park (see details below).

Also during the upcoming homestand, current NBA star and former University of Oregon standout Freddy Jones is hosting a Celebrity Softball Game at PGE Park on Saturday, July 9, as part of his second-annual Summer Slam Weekend. The 2004 NBA Slam Dunk champion has invited several top NBA players and national celebrities to take part in the game.

Notable NBA players Jermaine O'Neal, Damon Stoudamire, Rasheed Wallace, Kenny Anderson, Zach Randolph, Luke Jackson and Luke Ridnour are scheduled to be on hand, while recording artist Jay-Z is expected to anchor the celebrity team.

The game, which is part of a doubleheader event day at PGE Park, will begin at 3 p.m. Gates open at 2 p.m.

The celebrity game is a part of a doubleheader ticket that includes the softball game as well as a ticket for that night's Beavers game as they take on the Las Vegas 51s at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for the unique doubleheader event range from $9 to $14, with a portion of the proceeds raised benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Portland.

Monday, July 4 FOURTH OF JULY FIREWORKS/PGE ANNIVERSARY PARTY - Beavers vs. Tacoma - 7:05 p.m. Celebrate the nation's birthday in style with the Beavers again this season ... take in the game and a spectacular post-game fireworks show afterwards ... additionally, the July 4 game will feature live entertainment from a barbershop quartet and a Dixieland jazz band, as well as a "Carnival on the Concourse," featuring 25-cent carnival-style games on the Fred Meyer Family Deck ... Portland General Electric (PGE) will give the first 4,000 fans age 14 and under the opportunity to exchange an old quarter for the new commemorative Crater Lake quarter. All old quarters received will be donated to the Crater Lake National Park Fund ... the Energy Trust of Oregon will also be on hand to distribute free light bulb coupons to the first 2,500 fans in attendance ... PGE mascot, Larry the Lightbulb, and Boomer the Beaver will entertain children.

Tuesday, July 5 TACO TUESDAY - Beavers vs. Tacoma - 7:05 p.m. Fans attending Tuesday's game can get enjoy $1.00 tacos and refreshing margaritas in the Widmer Garden.

Wednesday, July 6 BUSINESSPERSON SPECIAL/ZENNER'S DOLLAR DOG WEDNESDAY - Beavers vs. Tacoma - 12:05 p.m. Take a break from work or schedule a relaxed meeting at PGE Park as the Beavers host a special Businessperson Special (12 noon start) ... also, take advantage of $1 hot dogs on Zenner's Dollar Dog Wednesday.

Thursday, July 7 GILLIGAN'S ISLAND NIGHT - Beavers vs. Tacoma - 7:08 p.m. With pleasant summer weather finally settling in, Thursdays have started heating up at PGE Park accordingly ... this time around, the Beavers are hosting "Gilligan's Island Night," with themed contests and prizes ... Thursday's game will be televised live on Comcast Cable's CNW 14.

Friday, July 8 BASEBALL CARD GIVEAWAY/FAITH NIGHT - Beavers vs. Las Vegas - 7:05 p.m. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive an official set of 2005 Portland Beavers trading cards, courtesy of Sprint PCS ... gates open at 5 p.m. for a special pre-game concert by "Blackstones" as part of Faith Night at PGE Park ... Larryboy from VeggieTales will also make an appearance at the stadium.

Saturday, July 9 FREDDY JONES SUMMER SLAM CELEBRITY SOFTBALL GAME - 3 p.m. (gates open at 2 p.m.) ZOOPERSTARS MASCOT APPEARANCE/COMCAST VISOR GIVEAWAY/STRIKE OUT ALS NIGHT - Beavers vs. Las Vegas - 7:05 p.m. It's a jam-packed doubleheader event day at PGE Park with the Freddy Jones Celebrity Softball Game kicking off a day full of great promotions ... during the Beavers game, national mascot act "Zooperstars" will be on hand to provide in-game entertainment (www.zooperstars.com) ... the first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a complimentary Comcast visor ... noted recording artist Tom Grant will sing the national anthem.

Sunday, July 10 PROUD TO BE A PADRE DAY/SUPER KIDS SUNDAY - Beavers vs. Las Vegas - 2:05 p.m. The Beavers will be handing out free Padres T-shirts, caps or visors to the first 1,000 fans in attendance as part of their annual "Proud to be a Padre Day" at PGE Park, in honor of their major league affiliate, the San Diego Padres ... fans can get Beavers player autographs on the Fred Meyer Family Deck before the game, and select fans will have the opportunity to play catch on the field ... after the game, kids will have the chance to run the bases at PGE Park.
