South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: South Bend Cubs lefty Faustino Carrera tossed his best start in a Cub uniform on Thursday night against the Peoria Chiefs with Victor Caratini as his catcher to earn his team leading third win of the season. In 5.2 innings, Carrera gave up just a run on four hits, along with five strikeouts in the 4-1 win.

The Cubs scored early and often to open up the three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals affiliate. In the second inning, South Bend went up a pair after loading the bases against starter Alvaro Seijas. After scoring on a ground ball out by Delvin Zinn, Levi Jordan smashed a single into right field for the 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Caratini picked up his only hit in Thursday's game on a hard-hit ball into right field. Cole Roederer advanced to third, but on a heads up baserunning play he scored after the ball was bobbled by Lars Nootbaar.

After departing, Carrera gave way on the mound to southpaw Jack Patterson. The lefty, who came into Thursday with a 0.96 ERA, went 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out four batters and his ERA now sits at 0.77.

Sean Barry made his Midwest League debut and closed things out for South Bend in the 9th inning. The right-hander earned his first save after being added to the Cubs roster before the game.

The Cubs now improve their record to 18-15 on the season. The club has won each series at home so far this season. They are off to a good start against Peoria and will toss one of their most reliable arms in Friday night's contest. Former Louisville Cardinal Riley Thompson will take the ball against the Chiefs.

Victor Caratini is expected to continue his rehab assignment tomorrow night. First pitch from Four Winds Field is scheduled for 7:35 PM.
