Lake County Captains News Release
(South Bend, IN) - Undeterred by facing the team with the best home record in the Midwest League, the Lake County Captains (31-20) came into Four Winds Field on Tuesday and defeated the South Bend Cubs (28-22), 10-3, in the first game of a three-game series.
After Captains starter Alex Royalty and Cubs starter Peyton Remy traded zeroes over the first three frames, the Captains opened the scoring with three runs in the fourth. Remy hit Tyler Freeman with a pitch that struck the shortstop in the left shoulder and ricocheted into his helmet. After a lengthy look-over from Athletic Trainer Patrick Reynolds, Freeman remained in the game. Remy then walked Will Benson and Bo Naylor's ground out to first moved the runners up to second and third. Mitch Reeves followed and ripped a double into the right-centerfield gap that scored both Freeman and Benson to give the Captains a 2-0 lead. After Reeves was tagged out in a rundown between second and third on a Miguel Jerez grounder, Jesse Berardi pulled a triple into the right field corner that brought home Jerez to extend Lake County's lead to 3-0.
The Cubs got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Levi Jordan singled and came home to score on an RBI double to left-center. Royalty, however retired the next three men in a row to maintain the Captains' 3-1 lead.
Lake County bounced back with three more runs in the fifth to push the lead to 6-1. Quentin Holmes started the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Freeman then knocked him in with a single. Two batters later, Naylor ripped a double to right that scored Freeman. Reeves plated Naylor with an RBI single to cap the three-run frame.
South Bend answered in the bottom of the fifth. Brennen Davis led off with a triple. After Royalty fanned Rafelin Lorenzo, Eric Gonzalez hit a fly ball to center that was deep enough to score Davis from third and cut the Captains' lead to 6-2.
Benson blasted away in the seventh to give the Captains some insurance. After Freeman was hit by another pitch, this time by reliever Eugenio Palma with one out, Benson cracked a drive over the right-centerfield wall. Benson's 13th homer of the year and third homer in the last four games gave the Captains an 8-2 advantage.
Lake County plated two more runs in the ninth. Jose Fermin started the rally with a hustle double. He hit a grounder up the middle that glanced off the diving glove of the shortstop, Weber, and bounced into centerfield. Fermin raced to second with a two-base hit and scored when Freeman singled him home. After Benson drew a walk against reliever Sean Barry and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Naylor hit an RBI ground out to second that scored Freeman to expand Lake County's lead to 10-2.
The Cubs scored once more on a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez in the bottom of the ninth before Manuel Alvarez recorded the final out. A ground out to second by Levi Jordan sealed the win for the Captains in game one of the three-game series.
Four different Captains turned in multi-RBI games on Tuesday. Reeves had a game-high three RBI in a 2-for-5 game with a double. Freeman, Benson and Naylor each knocked in two. Freeman also scored four times, making him responsible for six of the Captains' 10 runs. Benson walked three times and scored twice.
Lake County handed the Cubs just their sixth loss at home this year, dropping South Bend's record at Four Winds Field to 19-6. The Cubs still have not lost a series at home this year (7-0-1), but the Captains will have a chance to end that streak on Wednesday morning when the teams play game two of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 a.m.
