Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Lansing scored three runs in the sixth inning and three Lugnuts pitchers combined to allow just five hits as they held off the Dayton Dragons 3-1 on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field. The two clubs have split the first two games in the series.
The game featured a close pitcher's duel over the first five innings as Dayton's Ricky Salinas battled Josh Winckowski. Neither team could push across a run until the sixth when Lansing's Reggie Pruitt doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Griffin Conine to produce the game's first run. Jake Brodt followed with a long home run to left field to make it 3-0.
The Dragons scored their run in the eighth inning when Carlos Rivero tripled into the right field bullpen and scored on Randy Ventura's sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the ninth, the Dragons Juan Martinez walked with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate. Shard Munroe lined a rocket along the first base line, but Brodt, the Lugnuts first baseman, had him played perfectly and made the catch to end the game.
Salinas was outstanding over his first five innings before running into problems in the sixth. For the night, Salinas was credited with five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Carlos Machorro replaced Salinas with two outs in the sixth and retired all seven batters he faced with two strikeouts. Connor Bennett pitched a perfect ninth inning, notching two strikeouts.
Five different Dayton hitters each had one hit in the game. Rivero and Morgan Lofstrom each had a triple. The Dragons were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
Notes: Brian Rey and Pabel Manzanero each went 0 for 4 for the Dragons and saw their five-game hitting streaks come to an end...Bennett lowered his earned run average for the month of May to 1.98 with his scoreless inning...Dragons relievers have pitched seven and one-third innings in the series and retired all 22 batters they have faced.
