Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH – Center Michael Cammalleri collected three goals and goaltender Mathieu Garon won his ninth game of the season in relief as the Manchester Monarchs edged the Lowell Lock Monsters, 5-4, in a shootout at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. After a scoreless overtime, a crowd of 8,396 was treated to the first-ever shootout in Monarchs history. Left wing Dustin Brown and right wing Tom Kostopoulos scored in the shootout against Lowell rookie goaltender Cam Ward, a first-round pick (25th overall) of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Meanwhile Garon, who replaced Monarchs starter Adam Hauser to open the third period, stopped all four shootout attempts he faced from the Lock Monsters.

The Monarchs, now 13-1-0-0 with 26 points on the season, moved five points ahead of the second place Hartford Wolf Pack (10-3-1-0, 21 points) in the American Hockey League's Atlantic Division. The Wolf Pack suffered an overtime loss to the Portland Pirates on Friday night.

Garon, now 9-1-0 on the season, repelled 10 shots in the third period and another three shots in overtime to take the win. Ward, who finished with 37 saves, saw his record drop to 3-3-1.

The Lock Monsters did something no other team in the AHL has been able to do against the Monarchs this season. They scored the first goal of the game. Lowell veteran center Mike Zigomanis accomplished the feat, putting the Lock Monsters up 1-0 with his fourth goal. Zigomanis scored short-handed 4:29 into the contest when he snapped a wrist shot over the glove of Hauser (23 shots, 19 saves) and into the back of the net. Right wing Chad Larose and defenseman Allan Rourke assisted on the goal.

The Monarchs tied the game 48 seconds later with the first of three power play goals on the night for Cammalleri. The native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, collected his first goal by firing right wing Brad Smyth's set-up by Ward at 5:17 of the period. Center Yanick Lehoux also notched an assist on Cammalleri's 10th goal of the season.

The Lock Monsters took the lead again at 14:36 of the period when left wing Justin Taylor jabbed a loose puck into the Monarchs net. Defensemen Bruno St. Jacques and Sean Curry shared assists on the play as Taylor cleaned up a rebound left by Hauser.

The Lock Monsters added to their lead with a 5-on-3 power play goal from defenseman Ritchie Regehr just 28 seconds into the middle period. Regehr scored with a slap shot from the blue line. Center Eric Staal and left wing Colin Forbes each handled the puck before Regehr finished with his first goal of the season.

Cammalleri collected the next two goals in the period to tie the game at 3-3. Both scores came with the Monarchs holding the power play advantage. Cammalleri registered his second goal of the game and his 11th goal of the season with the Monarchs enjoying a 5-on-3 man-advantage at 5:18 of the period. Lehoux and defenseman Denis Grebeshkov assisted. Cammalleri completed the hat trick just over two minutes later with his 12th goal, scored on one knee from the right corner at 7:53. Grebeshkov and Smyth assisted.

Rourke gave the Lock Monsters a 4-3 lead at 15:29 of the period with his first goal, scored from the left point with help from Larose and left wing Ryan Bayda.

But the Monarchs, with Garon guarding the net in the third period, rallied to tie the game at 4-4 with the second goal of the season for rookie center Matt Ryan. Right wing Petr Kanko and defenseman Mike Weaver assisted on the goal, scored just 1:40 into the third period.

The Monarchs return to action when they travel to the DCU Center in Worcester to meet the Worcester IceCats on Sunday, November 21 at 4:05 p.m. After that, they're scheduled to host the Norfolk Admirals on Wednesday, November 24 at 7:35 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
