Calgary, AB - Calgary Hitmen forward Cael Zimmerman found the back of the net 6:53 into the second period of the 2021 ENMAX Teddy Bear Toss, triggering a waterfall of 15,324 stuffed toys on Saturday afternoon at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
"For 27 seasons our fans have backed this incredible charitable cause and we would once again like to thank them for their tremendous support," said Hitmen Manager of Business Operations Rob Kerr. "This game has become a holiday tradition and the bears collected today will have a significant impact in our local community."
Over 50 local agencies, including the Alberta Children's Hospital, Calgary Food Bank and Siksika Nation will share the stuffed toys this holiday season.
Since the inaugural 1995 toss, the Hitmen, with generous support from their partners and fans, have provided the community with 417,932 teddy bears.
The visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes took the game in overtime finishing out with a score of 5-4. Noah Boyko netted two in the first period to give the 'Canes the lead. Ty Nash scored the 'Canes third goal on the power play at the tail end of the second period. Aside from Cael Zimmerman's tally, Billal Noori netted his first two WHL goals to get the Hitmen back in it. Zac Funk tied the game up with 1:25 left in the game but Nash secured the win for the 'Canes with a goal just 1:37 into overtime.
Teddy bears collected will now be turned over to local charities on Tuesday, Dec. 7, beginning at 8:00 a.m. with distribution at the Scotiabank Saddledome at the TELUS Club entrance (access via 5th ST.). Hitmen players will assist the process.
During the game, Calgary wore special red-themed teddy bear jerseys with snow-capped numbers that will be sold in an online auction that opens Wednesday, December 8 and closes Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 8:00 p.m. Fans can bid on the jerseys at ElevateAuctions.com.
