Reno Aces News Release
TACOMA, WASH. - Two home runs from Nick Buss (@chilibuss) weren't enough for the Reno Aces (@Aces) in a 13-6 loss to the Tacoma Rainiers Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium.
Buss drove the third pitch of the game from Chien-Ming Wang over the right-field wall to put the Aces in front 1-0, and his two-run blast in the fourth inning broke a 4-4 tie. The leadoff shot was Buss' second leadoff homer season and seventh by an Aces player.
Unfortunately, neither Buss-provided lead held for Reno (55-60) starter Gabriel Arias as the 25-year-old struggled in his third appearance of the season against Tacoma.
Spotted with a 1-0 cushion behind Buss' first home run, Arias surrendered four runs in the second inning. As a team, Tacoma (56-60) hit for the cycle in the frame. Leury Bonilla tripled home Jabari Blash who singled with one away. Bonilla then scored moments later on a two-run homer by Steve Baron.
The next two batters - Patrick Brady and Ramon Flores - both doubled, extended the Rainiers' lead to 4-1.
Wang was shaky throughout as well, and the third inning proved no different when Danny Dorn ripped a game-tying three-run homer over the wall in right.
Buss' second homer of the game put Reno in front 6-4, but Chris Taylor blasted a three-run home run off of Arias in the bottom half, giving Tacoma the lead for good.
Taylor pushed Tacoma's lead to 8-6 with a run-scoring single in the sixth, and Baron made it 9-6 with a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the seventh.
Tacoma erased any Reno comeback hopes with four more runs in the eighth off of Matt Stites (@matt_stites). Stefen Romero hit a two-run homer and two batters later, Blash launched his fourth home run of the series.
Wang settled for a no-decision after giving up six earned runs on seven hits. Reliever Forrest Snow (8-8) was credited the win with one shutout inning in relief. Arias (5-4) suffered the loss after he yielded seven earned runs on seven hits over four innings.
Buss led the Aces offensively, going 3-for-5 with three RBI. The two long balls gave him his third career multi-homer game and first since April 12, 2013 at Iowa when he played for the Albuquerque Isotopes.
Blake Lalli (@BlakeLalli) also recorded his first three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with three singles.
Reno returns for a brief four-game homestand against Salt Lake beginning Tuesday night. Right-hander Aaron Blair (4-1, 3.86) starts for the Aces against left-hander Nate Smith (0-1, 10.80) for the Bees. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Aces Ballpark.
