Pimentel Continues Iowa Pitching Dominance in Season-Series Finale 3-0 Win over Omaha

DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 9, 2015) - Carlos Pimentel tossed 7.0 scoreless innings and Iowa jumped out to an early lead as the I-Cubs (64-51) shut out the Omaha Storm Chasers (63-53) 3-0 in Pacific Coast League action Sunday afternoon at Principal Park.

The win secured a 9-7 season-series win for the I-Cubs over the Storm Chasers for the second straight season. Over the final three games of the series, Iowa pitching only allowed two runs as they held Omaha to a .102 average (9-for-88). In the final 31 innings against Omaha, Iowa only allowed one run. Iowa has now won four straight games, and are a season-high 13 games above .500.

Iowa scored two runs in the bottom of the first off Omaha starter Clayton Mortensen. John Andreoli led off the frame with a walk, then advanced to third when Mortenson made a wild pickoff throw that caromed off Andreoli. Adron Chambers followed with an RBI single before advancing to third on another errant pickoff by Mortensen. Chambers scored two batters later when Christian Villanueva grounded into a double play.

Mike Olt added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a solo home run off former I-Cubs righty Casey Coleman, his sixth of the season.

Pimentel (9-5) only allowed two hits and a walk over his 7.0 innings with three strikeouts. Left-hander Joe Ortiz and right-hander Blake Cooper combined to spin a scoreless eighth inning. Right-hander Brian Schlitter hurled a perfect ninth inning, ending on a called strikeout as he secured his 17th save, second-most in the PCL.

It's the seventh time Pimentel hasn't allowed an earned run in a start this season as he notched a career-high nine wins.

Overall, Mortensen (7-9) tossed 5.0 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit and five walks with three strikeouts as he suffered the loss.

Iowa outhit Omaha 4-3, getting a base hit from four different players. Chambers led the way going 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Andreoli also reached base twice, drawing two walks while adding a run. Mike Baxter swiped two bases after drawing a walk in the sixth inning.

The Storm Chasers only had one runner reach second base, coming in the top of the second. Dusty Coleman, Reymond Fuentes and Jose Martinez all recorded singles as Omaha hit .201 (33-for-164) over the five-game set with Iowa.

The I-Cubs have a day off Monday before they start a four-game series on Tuesday with the Nashville Sounds, Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. First pitch is set for 7:08 p.m. CT. Iowa left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada (3-4, 3.84) will toe the rubber against Nashville righty Nathan Long (2-4, 6.45). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com.
