Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls recorded three hits, including a homer, as part of his Major League Rehab Assignment in the Bulls' 9-4 victory in game one, while Durham infielder Tristan Gray smashed a two-run blast in game two, however Sounds starting pitcher Caleb Boushley fired six strong innings in Nashville's 4-2 victory in the nightcap as the two teams split their doubleheader on Thursday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
After the Sounds started the scoring in game one with a three-run second inning, the Bulls battled back with four scores highlighted by CF Kameron Misner's two-run homer to right, as well as run-scoring singles by C Logan Driscoll and 2B Ronny Simon. Nashville would even the contest with a run in the top of the fourth, though Durham immediately answered with three tallies as 1B Austin Shenton smashed a two-run double to right, followed by RF Ruben Cardenas's sacrifice fly. Walls would then cap the scoring with his two-run blast in the sixth.
Walls (3-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI) would be joined by Shenton (2-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI) and Misner (2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI) in recording multi-hit efforts. Bulls reliever Cole Sulser (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 SO) earned the victory in the opener, while Sounds righty Jason Alexander (3.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) suffered the loss.
The Sounds struck first in the nightcap as well with a score in the top of the second. Gray would then go deep in the bottom of the frame to put the Bulls ahead 2-1, however Nashville would answer with a two-run third inning, followed by an insurance run in the fifth.
Boushley (6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO) earned the win for the Sounds, yielding two earned runs on two hits while fanning eight over his six innings pitched, with Thiago Vieira (1.0 IP, 2 SO) notching the save. Bulls starter Josh Fleming (3.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) suffered the defeat.
The two teams are set to face off again on Friday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm. RHP Anthony Molina is anticipated to get the nod for Durham and be opposed by Nashville RHP Colin Rea.
