Iowa Cubs News Release
TOLEDO, OH - The Iowa Cubs (72-54) emerged victorious in a high scoring, back-and-forth game with the Toledo Mud Hens (60-68) tonight at Fifth Third Field.
Toledo scored first as Andre Lipcius homered, knocking in Justyn-Henry Malloy for an early 2-0 lead in the first. They stacked on another run with a Wenceel Perez single in the second inning.
Iowa got their first run of the night on the board when Yonathan Perlaza scored on a P.J. Higgins RBI double. They tied things up at three with a two-run homer from Chase Strumpf later in that fourth inning.
Scoring would continue to jump back and forth for the remainder of the night. The Mud Hens retook the lead 4-3 with a solo home run from Ryan Kreidler in the bottom half of the fourth. Iowa bounced back in the fifth with three runs of their own.
Back-to-back doubles by Matt Mervis and David Bote scored Levi Jordan, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Mervis to give Iowa their first lead of the game, 6-4. The game was tied once again following a Malloy two-run home run. Toledo found themselves with a 7-6 lead with a Colt Keith solo home run, going back-to-back with Malloy in the bottom of the fifth.
The I-Cubs found themselves with the bases loaded following a pair of singles and a fielding error. Crow-Armstrong tied the game at seven, scoring Jared Young with a single. Yonathan Perlaza gave Iowa a 9-7 lead, scoring two with a single.
Iowa plated their 10th run of the night when Strumpf was walked in another bases loaded situation in the sixth. Caleb Kilian was credited for all seven runs by the Mud Hens. The I-Cubs' bullpen was able to hold off any more scoring from Toledo for the final 4.2 innings of the game to give Iowa the 10-7 victory.
