RailRiders Handle Red Wings, 4-1

Rochester, NY - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders topped the Rochester Red Wings 4-1 in extra innings. The game went scoreless through nine innings, but the RailRiders broke through in the tenth for their first win of the week.

The opponents worked a pitcher's duel through nine innings of work with just nine hits allowed in total. Both teams had base runners in all but two frames and couldn't drive in a run during regulation.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was able to connect in the top of the tenth inning to get on the board. Carlos Narvaez began at second as the pace of play runner. Andres Chaparro shot a ball up the middle to score Narvaez for a 1-0 lead. After Jamie Westbrook reached on a catcher's interference, Jake Lamb laced an RBI double to bring him home. Wilmer Difo followed with a two-run two bagger of his own for a 4-0 advantage.

Difo then took the mound in the bottom of the tenth inning. He let up an unearned run on a sacrifice fly to Luis Garcia. But got out of the inning to secure the win.

The RailRiders pitched a bullpen contest with Zach McAllister going two scoreless to start. Matt Krook, Greg Weissert, Matt Bowman, and Aaron McGarity each had clean appearances. Zac Houston, (W, 1-1) got out of the ninth with a zero on the board, stranding the winning run on third. Difo took the tenth for his fifth outing of the season.

Cory Abbott tossed four shutout innings in his start for Rochester. The righty struck out eight. The Red Wings used six pitchers out of the bullpen, including Major League rehabber Tanner Rainey. Daniel Mengden (L, 2-3) got the tenth inning giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester continue their series on Friday night at 6:45 PM. Righty Will Warren is set to make the start at Innovative Field.
