Bulls Blast Knights to Sweep Twinbill

September 2, 2022 - International League (IL)
Durham Bulls News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - Bulls infielder Miles Mastrobuoni mashed three home runs, including a first-inning blast in a 6-2 victory in game one and two big flies in a 7-6 triumph in the nightcap, while shortstop Tristan Gray smashed his International League leading thirtieth home run of the season as Durham crushed seven roundtrippers in a doubleheader sweep of the Charlotte Knights on Friday evening at Truist Field.

Mastrobuoni combined for four hits, including three longballs, while driving in four runs on the night. His first longball, a two-run blast, in the opening frame of game one put Durham ahead 2-0. C Rene Pinto would then go yard with a solo shot in the third to make it 3-0 before the Knights plated two in the last of the frame. The Bulls would answer, though, with a two-run fifth courtesy of Gray's RBI double and 3B Xavier Edwards' run-scoring single, before RF Ruben Cardenas' solo shot put an exclamation mark on game one.

Bulls southpaw Angel Perdomo (2.0 IP, 4 SO) tossed two perfect frames of relief to earn the victory, with righty Jimmy Yacabonis (2.0 IP, H, SO) firing the final two innings. Charlotte starter Tobias Myers (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 SO) suffered the defeat.

Mastrobuoni would then open the nightcap's scoring with a solo shot in the first. After the Knights answered with a single tally in the last of the first, Durham roared back with a five-run second featuring two more big flies, including Mastrobuoni's second in as many innings, and third of the night. Gray would then go yard in the third for his league-leading 30th homer of the year to make it a 7-1 Bulls advantage. Charlotte would eventually make it a two-run game with a four-run third frame before scoring a single tally in the sixth to lessen Durham's lead to one, however would be unable to erase the deficit.

Bulls reliever Dusten Knight (1.1 IP, BB, 2 SO) earned the win, while Javy Guerra (1.0 IP, SO) notched his ninth save with a perfect final frame. Knights starter J.B. Olson (1.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, BB) suffered the loss.

The two teams are slated to continue their six-game series on Saturday evening, with first pitch of set for 5:35pm. RHP Kevin Herget is anticipated to get the nod for Durham, with Charlotte's starting pitcher yet not announced.

Following their road series in Charlotte, the Bulls return to Durham Bulls Athletic Park to begin a six-game homestand with the New York Yankees Triple-A affiliate, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders on Monday, September 5. First pitch that night is scheduled for 6:35pm.

Tickets for that game and all remaining 2022 home dates can be purchased at DurhamBulls.com/tickets.
