Bulldog Power Play Leads Hamilton Past Rampage 4-0

HAMILTON (February 3, 2010) -- Allowing three power-play goals in a contest for the first time this season, the San Antonio Rampage were shut out by the Hamilton Bulldogs, 4-0, at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario on Wednesday night.

San Antonio (20-20-3-5), which ranked third in the American Hockey League in road penalty kill percentage (87.3) entering Wednesday, faced-off against a Hamilton club that boasted the second best record in the AHL (31-12-3-4) in a building where the Rampage were 0-4-0-0 all-time.

After being shut out by a 3-0 score in the only other meeting between the two teams in 2009-10, San Antonio entered the game without a goal against Hamilton since Brett MacLean scored a power-play goal against the Bulldogs on March 24, 2009 in a 6-1 defeat. Unfortunately for San Antonio, the streak was still standing as the final buzzer sounded at the end of regulation on Wednesday.

Uncharacteristically undisciplined play cost the Rampage early on as Hamilton took a 1-0 lead at the 11:14 mark of the first on a power-play goal by center Brock Trotter. After left wing Tom Pyatt wrapped the puck from the left corner of the Rampage zone behind the net to forward David Desharnais in the right corner, Desharnais quickly found Trotter on the left post, where the Hamilton center beat San Antonio goaltender Josh Tordjman high to the stick side to provide the Bulldogs with a 1-0 lead.

Following the first intermission, Hamilton added to their lead just one minute and 18 seconds into the middle frame on a goal by right wing Mike Glumac. After being struck by a slap shot from the right point by rookie defenseman P.K. Subban near the right post, Glumac corralled the puck and beat a sprawling Tordjman low to the glove side.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-0 on a power-play goal by Subban at the 9:56 mark of the second. Working the puck around the Rampage zone, Desharnais fired a shot from the right faceoff dot that stuck the right post and landed in the crease, where Subban poked home the rebound to provide Hamilton with a three-goal cushion.

Early in the third, Hamilton picked up where they left off in the previous period with their third power-play goal of the contest, from the stick of Desharnais, at the 3:08 mark of the final frame. Receiving a pass from Trotter near the right faceoff dot of the Rampage zone, Desharnais beat Tordjman high over the netminder's right shoulder for his 16th goal of the season.

Trotter finished with four points (1g, 3a) on the night, while Desharnais extended his point streak to 12 games with three points (1g, 2a).

San Antonio was 0-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-8 on the penalty kill in the contest.

Hamilton netminder Curtis Sanford stopped all 22 of the San Antonio shots he faced for his fourth shut out of the season and second shut out in 2009-10 against the Rampage, while Tordjman turned away 22 of 26 Hamilton shots in the loss.

San Antonio, now 2-1-0-1 on their Rodeo road trip, will make the approximately 930 mile flight to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they'll take on the Manitoba Moose at 7:30 p.m. CST on Friday at MTS Centre.
