'Monster' Second Period Lifts Lake Erie To A 3-2 Win
February 3, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Despite scoring to first-period goals, the Rochester Americans relinquished a 2-0 lead as the Lake Erie Monsters rallied to score three unanswered second-period goals to earn a 3-2 win tonight at Quickens Loan Arena. The North Division showdown was the sixth of eight meetings between the two teams as Rochester fell to 1-4-1-0 in the season series with Lake Erie and 29-18-2-0 on the campaign.
Forwards David Brine and Jimmy Bonneau scored for the visiting Amerks as rookie goaltender Alexander Salak made 34 saves in the losing effort. The game was Salak's ninth start in the last 10 contests for Rochester.
Lake Erie's Philippe Dupuis led the Monsters with a goal and an assist and Monsters netminder Tyler Weiman finished the night with 36 saves to pick up his 18th win of the season.
Bonneau opened the scoring 8:04 into the opening period with just his second goal of the season to give Rochester a 1-0 lead. Kenndal McArdle, in just his second game back in the Amerks lineup since rejoining the team, and seventh-year pro Jamie Johnson each collected assists on the play. With the assist, Johnson extended his current point streak to a season-high 10 games (5+10).
The Amerks doubled their lead at 17:12 of the period with Brine's 10th of the season from Rory Fitzpatrick and Victor Oreskovich. The first 20 minutes of play would end with Rochester on top 2-0.
The Monsters came out flying in the second, scoring three consecutive goals from three different players in under four minutes time that would ultimately determine the fate of the game.
Former two-time Calder Cup champion Darren Haydar jumpstarted the three-goal run just 1:54 into the second stanza with his 17th of the season to make it a 2-1 game. Lake Erie then used back-to-back power-play tallies from Brian Willsie and Dupuis within 46 seconds of each other to claim a 3-2 lead, with Dupuis' goal at 5:18 eventually being the game-winner.
Rochester returns home on Friday, February 5th as the Hamilton Bulldogs make their way across the border for the eighth of 10 get-togethers between the two teams. Faceoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena. Fans can tune into the live broadcast on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk.
