Brouillette, Wiikman Called Up To Hartford

CHARLOTTE, NC-Charlotte Checkers general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson announced today that goaltender Miika Wiikman has been recalled, and defenseman Julien Brouillette loaned, to the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack. The two players mark the fourth and fifth players to be called up this week.

Wiikman, 25, leads the Checkers in wins with nine and has only one regulation loss in his last 13 starts. The 5-foot-11 netminder has a 9-2-3 record with a 2.77 goals against average and.909 save percentage.

The native of Mariestad, Sweden spent most of last season with Hartford, leading the team in games played (43), saves (1,043) and shutouts (2). Wiikman also suited up in four games with the Checkers in 2008-09, posting a 1-1-2 record with a 2.36 GAA and.922 save percentage.

Prior to coming to North America, Wiikman helped HPK Hameenlinna capture the 2006 Finnish Elite League Championship. That season he won the Jari Kurri trophy, given to the league's most valuable player in the playoffs.

Brouillette, 23, leads all Checkers defensemen with 26 points (10g, 26a) and ranks sixth in scoring among ECHL blueliners. He also ranks fourth on the team with a +11 rating. Brouillette was called up to Providence (AHL) in December and registered one assist in three games.

The native of St. Esprit, Quebec is in his second season with the Checkers. In 2008-09, he led all Charlotte defensemen in scoring with 29 points (11g, 18a).

Prior to turning pro, Brouillette played four seasons with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. In four seasons, he notched 27 goals, 96 assists and accumulated 206 penalty minutes.
