Broncos Battle Blades Till Bitter End in Swift Current

Swift Current, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos' six-game point streak came to end on Saturday night as they fell 3-2 to the Saskatoon Blades.

It wasn't for a lack of trying though as the Broncos and Blades gave the fans an entertaining affair that didn't get away from either club at any point.

Broncos Assistant Coach Regan Darby said that even though the result wasn't in their favour, there were a lot of positives.

"We were focused. Um I thought we held the play a lot of the game," he said. "We had a lot of really good looks. Our physical play was there, defended really well."

The teams traded goals in the hockey game as Egor Sidorov scored on the powerplay to open the scoring for the Blades, but it was responded in the second period by Brady Birnie for the Broncos to make it a tie game heading into the third period.

In the third, the game opened up a bit as after 26 shots total in the first two periods, the teams combined for 26 in the third period alone, including 15 from the Broncos.

Brandon Lisowsky restored the Saskatoon lead early in the third, but the Broncos responded quick with Clarke Caswell about a minute-and-a-half later to get the game back to tied. However, just over the halfway point of the hockey game, a Bronco defender fell just a few feet in front of the Bronco net, turning the puck over to Lukas Hansen who beat Rocha for a 3-2 lead for Saskatoon.

The Broncos pressed late, but couldn't get one more to go in the dying moments of the game. Darby added that they got some timely scoring in the hockey game, but need to get the next one.

"Got some secondary scoring there, and just couldn't get that extra one there at the end," Darby said. "But overall, we had some good looks, had some scoring chances, out chanced them but in the end, short a power play goal there."

The Bronco powerplay was 0-for-4 in the contest, which included a five-minute powerplay in the hockey game. The penalty kill was 1-for-2 and Joey Rocha stopped 24 shots he faced in the game.

Swift Current hosts Lethbridge on Wednesday.
