Wheat Kings Run Out Of Gas Against Raiders

The road schedule was working against the Wheat Kings as they took a day trip to Prince Albert. As the game wore on, they slowly began to wear down themselves.

Nolan Flamand, Brett Hyland, and Dominik Petr all scored, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Raiders, who beat them 7-3.

"I was really disappointed in a lot of our guys competitive play throughout the night," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "They didn't really check into the game. That, for me, is hard to have at this time of the year with how meaningful these games."

The goals started just ten seconds into the first period and barely slowed down from there. Off the opening draw, Caleb Hadland broke into the zone and fed Flamand at the far post to make it 1-0 Wheat Kings. But that was just the start of a parade of goals.

The Raiders got one back when Sloan Stanick fired one through traffic at five-on-five. The Wheat Kings answered with Hyland finding a loose puck on the power play and knocking it home. Not two minutes later, things were tied up again when the Raiders won a battle for a loose puck in front.

On their first power play of the game, the Raiders took the lead when Winnipeg native Oli Chenier was left alone in front and was able to bat home the rebound of a shot-pass through traffic. And all this was before the first period was 11 minutes old.

A power play gave the Wheat Kings a chance to get back in it in the second period, but the Raiders benefited most as they scored a shorthanded goal. Off the rush, Niall Crocker chopped home a one-timer to make it 4-2.

The power play did get a bit of redemption, however, as Luke Shipley threaded the needle to Petr at the top of the right circle. Petr hammered home a one-timer to make it 4-3.

Early in the third, the Wheat Kings fell down by two again, with Macias tipping home a point shot to make it 5-3. Then, on the power play, the Raiders struck again, this time with Crocker parked in front tipping home a pass by Stanick.

The loss means the Wheat Kings take four of a possible six points on the week before facing the Moose Jaw Warriors on Thursday next week. Puck drop is 7:00.
