Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Brett Lutes had a hat trick in the second period, and the Bakersfield Condors wiped out the Fresno Falcons on Toilet Paper Giveaway Night in front of 4,825 at The Nest. The team is back Saturday night to face Long Beach, as KUZZ 107.9 presents Nintendo Wii Giveaway. Doors open at 6 p.m., puck drops at 7 p.m.
After a scoreless first 20 minutes, Bakersfield (9- 6-2) blew it open in the second. Lutes opened the scoring at 8:03 when his shot from the right point deflected off a Falcons defenseman and past goalie Scott Stirling to make it 1-0.
Then the Condors went to work on the power- play, scoring three goals in the span of 5:35. The steadily improving unit paid dividends at 14:00, when Steve Rodberg and Sean Venedam set up Lutes at the side of the cage, and he put it up over Stirling to make it 2-0.
Just 1:11 later, Andrew Ianiero notched his fourth of the year, taking a pass from Kevin Truelson and beating Stirling through the legs.
Lutes capped the outburst when he jammed home a rebound at 19:35 to make it 4-0, with assists to Kevin St. Jacques and Joel Irving. It completed his hat trick, the first by Bakersfield this season, the first since Venedam had three on the road at Stockton on Feb. 4, 2006, and the first at home since Venedam did it Nov. 5, 2005 against Las Vegas.
Fresno (10-7-0) spoiled Jamie Hodson's shutout at 12:14 of the third period when Colin Shields tapped home a cross-ice feed from Tyler Kindle.
The Falcons added another goal late when Kindle banged in a rebound to make the final score 4-2.
The Condors couldn't get much going on the scoreboard early on, but they did with the fists. After a scrum in front of the Fresno net, Todd Griffith squared off against Brian McConnell, and after taking a few shots, Griffith delivered two big right hands, knocking McConnell to the ice.
