Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. - John Morlang netted Fresno's first hat trick of the season, and Cory Murphy recorded four assists as the Falcons defeated the Phoenix RoadRunners 4-2 in front of a season-high crowd of 9.409 fans at Save Mart Center.
Fresno took command early, scoring three times in the opening period for a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.
The Falcons opened the scoring at the 4:59 mark with a power-play goal off of the stick of Tomas Fojtik. Cody Rudkowsky made the initial save, but the rebound came to Fojtik on the far post and he put the puck home, bringing down a rain of teddy bears on Teddy Bear Toss Night.
Fresno's power-play struck again at 7:10. Colin Shields' shot was turned aside by Rudkowsky, but the rebound came free to Morlang who pushed the puck into the net giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
Morlang added his second of the night at 16:20 giving the Falcons the 3-0 lead. Tyler Kindle sent the puck to the front of the net, and Morlang was able to bat the puck out of midair for his ninth of the season.
Phoenix got on the scoreboard 14:49 into the second period. Todd Jackson led a 3-on-1 rush into the Falcons zone, and fed a cross ice pass to Brett Smith on the far post. Smith was able to flip a shot over Ryan MacDonald's glove for his seventh goal of the season.
Morlang completed the hat trick 14:12 into the final period, beating Rudkowsky with a quick slap shot from the left-wing circle.
The RoadRunners pulled within 4-2 at 17:25 on a power-play goal from Alexandre Rouleau, who beat MacDonald high to the glove side.
MacDonald made 33 saves to pick up his fourth win of the season.
The Falcons open a three-game series in Alaska on Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. PT. Catch all of the action on 1550 Sporting News Radio, starting with the Port of Subs Pre-Game Show at 8:00.
