Trenton Devils News Release
JOHNSTOWN, PA (December 1, 2006) - Mike Pandolfo's hat trick was not enough to lead the Trenton Titans to victory as they fell to the Johnstown Chiefs in the shootout by the score of 4-3 at the Cambria County War Memorial.
As the Titans had been able to come from behind in previous games against the Chiefs, so was Johnstown this particular evening against Trenton.
Mike Pandolfo notched the Titans' first hat trick of the season and make the score 3-1 when he took Gregg Johnson's centering pass and banged it into the open net at 7:05 of the third. The goal was Pandolfo's team-leading eleventh of the season
The Chiefs started the comeback when Radek Smolenak intercepted a pass inside the Trenton zone and beat Gregg Naumenko with a wrist shot to the near post. Then with 4:10 remaining in regulation, Johnstown would strike again on the power play as Randy Rowe and Maxime Boisclair worked the give-and-go to perfection to knot it up 3-3 and send into the overtime.
In the extra session Chiefs goalie Gerald Coleman took over. The Titans could not light the lamp despite a power play and outshooting the Chiefs 7-4. Coleman went on to save 5-for-5 in the shootout while Gus Katsuris registered the lone goal for Johnstown in the bottom half of round one.
Pandolfo broke the scoreless tie at 15:51 of the opening period when he was able to take Johnson's feather pass and poke it past Coleman. Pandolfo continued his barrage in the second frame with the Titans on the man-advantage as he Pandolfo blasted a slapshot into the top corner at 8:22 for a 2-0 Trenton lead.
Fifty-nine seconds later Johnstown would cut Trenton's lead back to one goal when Boisclair stuffed home his own rebound for a power play goal.
Gregg Naumenko stopped 22 of 25 through overtime and 4-of-5 in the shootout.
