April 7, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release

The Providence Bruins secured a spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs for the 10th time in the 12-year history of the franchise on Wednesday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, as they skated to a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the Portland Pirates. The Black and Gold entered the game needing one point to clinch a berth in the post-season. The Bruins are now 35-28-10-4 (84 points), putting them in fourth place in the Atlantic Division, three points behind the Worcester IceCats. Providence is 6-4-10 in overtime games this season.

Bruin captain Rich Brennan scored the overtime winner on his 11th goal of the season, on a power play at 4:38. It was his third game-winning goal of the season, and second in overtime. Center Matt Herr added his 18th goal of the year, along with an assist.

Bruin goaltender Tim Thomas stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced, and is 19-15-5 on the year.

P-Bruins defenseman Zdenek Kutlak, who also assisted on the overtime goal, established a new franchise record for games played, as he suited up for his 253rd game as a Bruin. Former Bruin defenseman and head coach Peter Laviolette, who played for the team in 1992-93 and from 1994-97, had previously held the record.

The Bruins host their regular season home finale on Friday, April 9 at 7:05 p.m., when they host the Springfield Falcons. It will also be Team Photo Night. All fans in attendance will receive a free autographed team photo, courtesy of ABC-6, Bob's Stores and University Orthopedics. The Bruins will pass out their team awards prior to the start of the game.

Tickets for Friday are available online at www.providencebruins.com, all TicketMaster outlets (401-331-2211 or 508/617-931-2000) and the Dunkin' Donuts Center Providence box office. Information on season ticket plans can be obtained by calling the P-Bruins ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or by logging on to the team website.
