Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (24-10-0) picked up their fourth straight win thanks to the goaltending of David Shantz, edging past the South Carolina Stingrays (19-14-3) in a 2-1 shootout victory Friday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 5,831.
In an entertaining game for the fans, the two long-time rivals hooked up in a playoff type game. The Everblades drew first blood when a red-hot Reggie Berg notched his team-leading 19th goal of the season just 4:55 into the game. Berg jammed a tight angle shot past Stingrays net minder David Parley to keep his goal scoring and point scoring streak alive a five. Berg's line mates, Dustin Johner and Jon Lehun assisted on the game's first goal.
The score remained 1-0 for the Everblades until late in the second period when South Carolina enjoyed a 5-on-3 power play. Just as the first penalty expired, Matt Reid wristed home a shot from the right circle to tie the game with 43 seconds remaining in the period. From there, the goaltending took over with Shantz and Parley each making eight saves during the final 20 minutes to send the game to overtime.
For the Everblades it was their third straight game needing extra time, and just as before they came out on top. After a scoreless overtime, which saw both teams enjoy a power play, the game moved to the five-round shootout where Brad Zancanaro scored on Florida's first attempt. Peter Szabo countered for South Carolina in round two to even the shootout at 1-1.
In the second round for the Everblades, Chris Lee picked up the eventual game-winner by firing a shot from the slot just inside the left post to give the Everblades the 2-1 advantage. The Stingrays failed to convert on their final three attempts, with the best chance coming for Evan Schwabe in the fourth round, by beat Shantz with a shot, but ringing it off the goal post. The win improved the Everblades to 4-0 in shootouts this season, and gave Florida the extra point in the standings.
In goal, Shantz (11-4-0) collected his second straight win by stopping 32 of 33 shots in regulation and overtime, and four of five shooters in the shootout. Parley, who was making his 11th straight start, earned a tie in the standings after stopping 35 of 36 shots in regulation and overtime, and saw his record go to 17-9-3.
On the power play, the Everblades finished 0-for-5, while the Stingrays closed out the night 1-for-5.
The Florida Everblades, proud affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers, return to the ice on Saturday, January 13 when they host the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:30 p.m. from Germain Arena.
