Florida Everblades News Release
N. CHARLESTON, SC - The Florida Everblades (30-25-3) suffered a tough 3-2 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays (31-21-4) before a sell-out crowd of 10,304 on Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Jordan Pietrus' second goal of the night with 2:04 remaining in regulation proved to be the game-winner coming off a one-time shot from the bottom of the left circle. The winning play was set up with the puck worked along the right boards before Joe Finley found Pietrus with his pass from the right point.
The Everblades opened the scoring with game's only goal of the first period. Late in the frame Matt Beca tallied his 15th goal of the season after taking a pass from David Fischer at the offensive blue line. Beca got a step on the defense and cut across the front of the goal mouth where he got goalie Shane Owen to go down before lifting a shot over the sprawled Stingrays net-minder. Mathieu Roy notched the other assist on the goal.
The Stingrays came out strong in the second period and carried the majority of the play as they outshot the Everblades 17-5 in the frame. In addition to having the shot advantage the Stingrays also got the advantage on the scoreboard with a pair of goals.
South Carolina evened the score at one early in the frame at 2:41 when Luke Popko collected his third goal of the season after the Everblades over-skated a loose puck at the top of the right circle. Popko collected the puck and snapped a quick shot between the pads of Everblades goaltender Adam Avramenko.
Midway through the period the Stingrays grabbed the lead off a failed clearing attempt by the Everblades. At 10:43 Pietrus took a pass from Josh Godfrey in the high slot before letting fly a hard wrist shot that found its way into the upper left corner of the net for his third goal of the year.
The Everblades battled back to tie the game early in the third period on Ian McDonald's first professional goal just 2:31 into the frame. The play began with Alex Hutchings leading a pass to Evgeny Timkin who gained the zone with a nice move on a Stingrays defender. After getting free from the defense, Timkin led the puck for McDonald who let a good wrist shot from the top of the right circle that beat Owen low on the stick side.
The game remained tied until late in the frame when just when it was looking like it might head to overtime, the Stingrays struck for the eventual game-winner.
In goal Avramenko suffered the tough-luck loss in his ECHL debut allowing the three goals on 39 shots. For South Carolina Owen improved his record to 5-2-2 by turning away 16 of 18 shots.
